All the characters in the Sonic universe
From Sonic and Tails to the Deadly Six, from Dr. Eggman's robots to the heroes born in the IDW comics: the whole cast of the Sonic universe, sorted continuity by continuity.

💙 Team Sonic, the core of the cast
Four founding heroes, and the transformation from Sonic Unleashed

Before the rivals, the competing teams and the parallel continuities lies this core: a hurried hedgehog, a mechanic fox, a stubborn guardian and an obstinate female hedgehog. Four characters who arrived between 1991 and 1994, with roles that answer one another: speed calls for machinery, strength and stubbornness. To them is added the bestial form Sonic takes in 2008.

Four paths born between 1991 and 1994, plus one transformation: the rest of the cast is built around this core.
🖤 Team Dark and the legacy of the ARK
Fifty years of secrets between the ARK and Earth

Fifty years ago, the Space Colony ARK housed Project Shadow, a United Federation program meant to produce an immortal life form. The G.U.N. raid shattered everything there. Out of that disaster came a black hedgehog, a sealed prototype and a team born much later, Team Dark.

From Gerald's revenge to the Black Arms, the great plots of Shadow's past all lead back to what played out on the ARK.
🕵️ Team Chaotix, the detective agency
Three modern detectives and the far larger classic line-up

The group is born in Knuckles' Chaotix, released on the Sega 32X in 1995: around Knuckles, six other playable characters end up on the same island. Sonic Heroes, released in Japan in late 2003, reintroduces the Chaotix in a tighter form, three broke detectives who take any case. The two line-ups only partly overlap.

From the wider band of Knuckles' Chaotix to the trio of investigators perpetually short of money, the Chaotix have changed format a great deal.
🌈 Sonic's allies and travelling companions
Those who cross the hedgehog's path, game after game

Around Sonic orbit characters who form neither a fixed team nor a family: each one emerges from a specific game, sometimes from another dimension or another century. Some accompany him for the length of one adventure, others come back regularly. Here are those allies, placed back in the title that saw them born.

Brought together by their friendship for Sonic, they come from games and continuities that, without him, would never cross paths.
🏁 The rivals: Babylon Rogues, bounty hunters and brawlers
Sky thieves, mercenaries and arcade fighters

These rivals do not serve Eggman out of loyalty, but for payment. Two families share the role of rival: the Babylon Rogues, a trio of thieves on Extreme Gear introduced with Sonic Riders in 2006, and the 1994-1996 crowd, born on Game Gear and in arcade cabinets, between bounty hunters and tournament brawlers.

A decade separates these brawlers from the Babylon Rogues, but both camps chase the same emeralds and the same victory over Sonic.
🥚 Doctor Eggman and his high command
The brain of the Eggman Empire, his seconds and his rival

Doctor Eggman has never worked alone, but his entourage depends on the medium. The games give him robot assistants, an artificial intelligence and a rival descendant from the future, the anime Sonic X invents a trio of lackeys, the IDW comics and the Paramount movies attach lieutenants of their own. Here is that high command, continuity by continuity.

From one medium to the next, the doctor's entourage changes completely; the doctor himself never changes his plan.
🤖 Eggman's robots: Badniks, mechanical doubles and combat machines
From the mass-produced Badnik to Eggman's giant mecha

Doctor Eggman almost never fights alone. His arsenal reads in three families: the mass-produced Badniks that populate the levels, the mechanical doubles cut in the image of Sonic and his friends, and the combat machines, from the assault robots of the E-Series to the giant mecha. Several of them have escaped him.

From a motorized ladybug to a steel dragon, Eggman's machinery often ends up escaping its inventor.
👑 The echidnas, Chaos and the ancient lore
Millennia of echidna history, from the altar to the last guardian

Long before Knuckles, the echidnas formed entire civilizations. Sonic Adventure, released in 1998, tells of the fall of one of them about three thousand years ago, around an altar, a water creature and a seal. Sonic Chronicles, on Nintendo DS, adds a second one in a continuity kept apart from the main games.

Two lost echidna civilizations, one of which appears in no game other than Sonic Chronicles: Sonic's ancient lore advances above all through ruins.
🌑 The major threats of the games
Eleven major threats, each tied to its own game

Behind every great Sonic game stands an opponent built to match it: a dismembered sun god, a creature sealed inside an emerald, an entity from the depths of space. These eleven threats belong to the games, not to the comics or the animated series, and each one comes with the title that gave rise to it.

Each of these threats was written for one specific game: that is where it takes on its full meaning.
😈 The Deadly Six, the six Zeti of Lost World
Six demons of the Lost Hex freed by mistake

The Zeti are a race of horned demons native to the Lost Hex, able to manipulate magnetic fields and therefore to take control of machines. In Sonic Lost World, released in 2013 on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, Eggman enslaves six of them with a conch, the Cacophonic Conch, until Sonic makes him drop it.

Beaten on the Lost Hex, they came back: all six in the IDW comics, Zavok in Team Sonic Racing, his phantom copy in Sonic Forces.
🐣 The Chao, the Wisps and the other creatures
The small species that populate Sonic's world

The Sonic universe is not limited to heroes and villains: whole species populate its settings. Some are raised like pets, others lend their powers for the length of a level, others simply improve a statistic. These creatures accompany the saga from the first Badniks to the islands of Sonic Frontiers.

Raised, freed or picked up along the way, these species are a reminder that Sonic's world is inhabited far beyond its heroes.
📺 Sonic X, the cast of the animated series
The humans and creatures born in the animated series

Broadcast in Japan on TV Tokyo from April 6, 2003 to March 28, 2004, Sonic X forms a continuity of its own, animated by TMS Entertainment. Its first 52 episodes were followed by 26 more, the Metarex arc, which Japanese television only scheduled in 2020, on Kids Station. The characters below were born in this series.

A closed continuity, a cast of its own: Sonic X remains a branch apart from the rest of the saga.
🌀 Sonic Prime and the Chaos Council
Shadow, the Shatterverse variants and the five Eggman doctors

Streamed on Netflix from December 2022 to January 2024 across twenty-three episodes, Sonic Prime shatters the hedgehog's world into five Shatterspaces: New Yoke City, the Boscage Maze, No Place, the Grim and Ghost Hill, where his friends are nothing but ghosts. In the first three, everyone has a variant; in New Yoke City, Eggman has five.

When the five doctors fight over power in the final episode, the heroes open a portal and send them all into the Void.
🎸 Sonic Underground, the royal siblings
A standalone continuity where Sonic has a family

Aired in 1999 and stopped after forty episodes, Sonic Underground is an animated series produced by DiC Entertainment that gives Sonic a sister, a brother and a reigning mother. This continuity stands alone: in the video games, Sonic has no brother, no sister and no mother. Each child wears a royal medallion that turns into a musical instrument.

The series ended before the Council of Four ever formed: the family was never reunited on screen.
🗽 The characters of SatAM and the Archie comics
The Freedom Fighters, their family and their enemies

Two works born the same year gave Sonic a family, a band of resistance fighters and enemies all their own: the animated series SatAM, aired from September 18, 1993 to December 3, 1994, and the Archie comics, published from July 1993 to December 2016. The games kept only the cameos in Sonic Spinball.

A family of paper and cel, left at the door of the games, yet known by heart by the earliest fans.
📚 The IDW comics, the modern generation
An official continuity born on paper since 2018

Since April 4, 2018, IDW Publishing has published the official series that succeeded the Archie comics, under SEGA license. A whole generation of characters was born there: canon on the comics side, absent from the main games, guests on mobile at best. Only Tangle and Whisper made it through, playable in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds in 2025.

All born on paper: since 2018, the IDW continuity has been writing its own chapter of the Sonic universe.
🎬 The Sonic films on the big screen
The Paramount trilogy and the characters who populate it

Paramount brought Sonic to the big screen in live action mixed with animation, directed by Jeff Fowler: three feature films released in 2020, 2022 and 2024. This continuity rewrites the heroes of the games and invents brand-new humans around them, those of Green Hills. A fourth installment is announced for March 2027.

Three films, a continuity of its own: the games never had a sheriff of Green Hills, nor a café run by the doctor's assistant.
⚔️ The Storybook worlds: Secret Rings and Black Knight
Sonic between the Arabian Nights and Camelot

Two Wii exclusives make up the Storybook series: Sonic and the Secret Rings, released in 2007, sends the hedgehog into the Arabian Nights; Sonic and the Black Knight, released in 2009, throws him into the kingdom of Camelot. Each book has its own figures: genies on one side, knights, magic and a talking sword on the other.

Two books, two worlds, two endings: the Storybook series stopped at these Wii volumes alone, from 2007 and 2009.
👻 The figures apart: the OVA, the legends and the forgotten
The 1996 OVA, the creepypastas and the cut characters

Three families stand on the fringes of the canon. The 1996 Japanese OVA invented its own characters, absent from every game. The creepypastas produced figures that SEGA neither wrote nor approved. Finally, some characters were designed and then cut during the development of their game. Three ways of existing alongside the series.

Three quite distinct margins: what the OVA invented, what SEGA cut, and what the fans added on their own.
❓ Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions that come up most often about Sonic characters.
How many Sonic characters are there?
Several hundred, once the games, the Archie and IDW comics, the animated series and the movies are added together. This guide covers 190 of them: the ones met often enough, while playing, reading or watching, to be worth knowing.
Who are the main Sonic characters?
Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose and Dr. Eggman form the historic core, present in every continuity. Shadow the Hedgehog, Rouge the Bat and E-123 Omega, grouped together as Team Dark, join them from Sonic Adventure 2 onwards.
Which Sonic characters come from the comics and not the games?
The Freedom Fighters — Sally Acorn, Bunnie Rabbot, Rotor, Antoine D'Coolette, NICOLE — come from the SatAM series and the Archie comics. Tangle, Whisper, Belle, Surge, Kit, Dr. Starline and Mimic come from the IDW comics, the official continuity since 2018. None of them is playable in the games.
What is the difference between Metal Sonic, Mecha Sonic and Silver Sonic?
Three separate robots. Metal Sonic first appears in Sonic CD (1993) and becomes Sonic's recurring rival. Mecha Sonic is the opponent of Sky Sanctuary Zone in Sonic & Knuckles (1994). Silver Sonic is the secret weapon of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on Master System and Game Gear (1992): its European manual names it Silver Sonic and the Japanese manual Mecha Sonic, hence the lasting confusion.
Are the Sonic Prime characters in the games?
No. Nine, Rusty Rose, Knuckles the Dread and the five doctors of the Chaos Council were created for the Netflix series aired from December 2022 to January 2024. They are variants of familiar characters, specific to the shards of the Shatterverse.
Are Sonic.EXE and Tails Doll official characters?
Tails Doll is: it is a playable character in Sonic R (1997), brought back as an enemy in Sonic Superstars. Its reputation as a cursed object, though, comes only from horror stories written by fans. Sonic.EXE is official in no way at all: it is a creepypasta published online in 2011, absent from every SEGA game.
