Five elite robots, a crowned leader and a resounding betrayal populate Sonic Mania, released in 2017. Plain Egg-Robos sent to retrieve the Phantom Ruby on Angel Island, the Hard-Boiled Heavies gain unprecedented powers and a will of their own from contact with the gem, at the cost of a corrupted artificial intelligence. Each one guards a zone: Heavy Gunner at Studiopolis, Heavy Shinobi and his freezing katana at Press Garden, Heavy Magician the shapeshifter at Mirage Saloon, Heavy Rider on her Motobug named Jimmy. Heavy King, for his part, betrays Eggman, soaks up the Phantom Ruby and becomes the Phantom King, final boss of the Egg Reverie Zone.
