VillainDark QueenExcalibur

The sorceress who summons Sonic to save Camelot ends up becoming the ultimate threat in Sonic and the Black Knight (2009, Wii). Merlin's granddaughter, Merlina is in fact after the scabbard of Excalibur, the only object able to grant immortality and to keep alive a King Arthur who never existed. Transformed into the Dark Queen, she wants to freeze the kingdom in eternal stasis after glimpsing its decline. Sonic wins as Excalibur Sonic, a form born from the fusion of Caliburn, Arondight, Galatine and Laevatein, then spares her in the name of the rose motif. Voices: Melissa Hutchison and Mamiko Noto.

She summons Sonic to save her kingdom... then becomes the ultimate threat herself. Merlina, the sorceress from Sonic and the Black Knight, is one of the few tragic villains in the saga: her downfall comes not from cruelty, but from despair.

Who is Merlina?

Merlina is a young and talented sorceress from the kingdom of Camelot, and the central figure of Sonic and the Black Knight (2009, Wii), the second and last game in the Storybook series. A key biographical detail: she is the granddaughter of the legendary wizard Merlin – not his daughter, and certainly not Merlin himself.

It is she who, at the very beginning, summons Sonic from his world to come and save the kingdom. A summoner's role that strongly recalls Shahra in the first Storybook game – right down to the physical resemblance (magenta hair, pointy ears) and the fate of being a traitor.

The False King Arthur

Merlina presents her quest simply: to overthrow the Black Knight, a King Arthur who has become a tyrant thanks to a power of immortality. However, the game holds a major twist: this King Arthur never truly existed. He is merely an illusion, a puppet originally created by Merlin.

The key to this illusion is the scabbard of Excalibur – not the sword. An essential lore detail: it is the scabbard that grants immortality, and it was what kept the false king "alive". And it was precisely this scabbard that Merlina coveted from the beginning. Her goal was never to restore peace.

The True Face: the Dark Queen

Here's the real twist of the game, the one to remember: the true final antagonist is Merlina, not King Arthur. Once the scabbard is within her reach, she transforms into the Dark Queen, the Queen of Darkness, and confronts Sonic as the final boss.

Her motivation is what makes the character so compelling. Having seen through magic the future of Camelot – war, ruin, inevitable decline – and consumed by grief, Merlina draws a nihilistic conclusion: since "nothing lasts forever," it's better to freeze everything. She wants to use the power of the scabbard to plunge the kingdom into eternal stasis, an immobile present that will never know its end. A dream of eternity born of despair, not a thirst for power.

Her Defeat and Redemption

To defeat her, Sonic does not rely on the Chaos Emeralds. The final battle mobilizes the four sacred swords of the kingdom – Caliburn, Arondight, Galatine, and Laevatein – whose fusion, driven by the hedgehog's will, awakens the true Excalibur. Sonic then transforms into Excalibur Sonic, a golden armored knight form, the only one capable of piercing the Dark Queen's immortality protection.

But Merlina is not "destroyed." True to her status as a tragic villain, she is spared and brought back to reason – a bittersweet ending rather than a triumphant victory. The entire game, moreover, follows the rose motif: if life is beautiful, it is precisely because it withers. It is this idea that Sonic opposes to Merlina's dream of eternity, and which saves her.

Her Appearances

Merlina is a character exclusive to Black Knight, with no role in the main continuity of the saga. She is part of a fine gallery of heroes transposed into knights: in this Camelot, Shadow becomes Sir Lancelot, Knuckles becomes Sir Gawain, and Blaze becomes Sir Percival, while Amy embodies Nimue, the Lady of the Lake – not to be confused with Merlina. She is voiced by Melissa Hutchison in English and Mamiko Noto in Japanese.
