The Biolizard is a gigantic reptilian creature, kept alive by a life support system attached to its back. Conceived as a scientific experiment aboard the Space Colony ARK, it remained in suspended animation for about fifty years.

Shadow's first prototype

Here's its secret: the Biolizard is the very first prototype of the "Ultimate Life Form," created by Professor Gerald Robotnik as part of the Project Shadow. Deemed imperfect, it was set aside in favor of the final, successful version of the project: Shadow the Hedgehog himself.

The guardian programmed by Gerald

After the death of his granddaughter Maria during the military raid by G.U.N., Gerald descends into madness. He secretly programs the Biolizard to awaken and serve as the last line of defense in the heart of the ARK (the Cannon's Core), to ensure the station's fall onto Earth — his revenge.

The creature awakens when Dr. Eggman loads the Eclipse Cannon with the seven Chaos Emeralds. It's Shadow who confronts it on the ground, aiming for its dorsal life support system.

From Biolizard to Finalhazard

Defeated on the ground, the Biolizard does not give up: thanks to Chaos Control, it teleports outside the ARK and merges its body with the station (the Eclipse Cannon replacing its tail). It then becomes the Finalhazard, a colossal spatial final form.

It will take the combined efforts of Super Sonic and Super Shadow to destroy it, as the ARK enters the atmosphere. (Not to be confused, therefore: the Biolizard is the ground form, the Finalhazard is the final form merged with the colony.)

Its reappearances

The Biolizard is too iconic to remain a one-off boss. It returned in Sonic Generations (Nintendo 3DS version, 2011) and, more recently, in Sonic X Shadow Generations (2024), where it serves as the first boss of Shadow's campaign.
