A brilliant scientist, a knighted noble and the inventor of the Roboticizer, Uncle Chuck — real name Sir Charles Hedgehog — is Sonic's uncle and father figure, a character born of the tie-in media and completely absent from the video games.

Who is Uncle Chuck?

Behind the familiar nickname Uncle Chuck stands Sir Charles Hedgehog, an elderly anthropomorphic hedgehog who largely raised his nephew Sonic and serves as his father figure.

The word Sir is not a first name but a knight's title: Charles was knighted in the service of the king of Mobotropolis, where he held the post of Minister of Science in the cartoon's continuity.

An essential point to keep in mind: Uncle Chuck is a character from the tie-in media — the SatAM cartoon produced by DiC and the Archie comics — and has never appeared in a video game. In SatAM, his English voice is that of actor William Windom.

The Roboticizer: a benevolent invention hijacked

Chuck's great work is the Roboticizer, a machine he designs for an entirely beneficial purpose: in the SatAM continuity, he conceives it to help the elderly live longer.

On discovering that the device stripped its subjects of their free will, Chuck destroys his own invention — but the plans are stolen by Dr. Robotnik, who turns it to roboticizing and enslaving the entire population.

It bears saying plainly: Chuck really is the inventor, and Robotnik the one who corrupts it. The character thus embodies the remorse of the scientist whose benevolent creation has been turned against his own people.

Roboticized then freed: the spy of Knothole

After Robotnik's coup, Mobotropolis is renamed Robotropolis and Chuck is roboticized in turn, reduced to a worker robot in the tyrant's service for many long years.

After about eleven years, Sonic manages to restore his free will thanks to a Power Ring. Chuck then makes a decisive choice: to remain in the enemy city as a spy working for Sally Acorn and her cell of Knothole resistance fighters.

These Freedom Fighters form a makeshift family that takes in the stiff coyote Antoine D'Coolette, the half-flesh, half-metal fighter Bunnie Rabbot and the walrus mechanic Rotor; for them, Chuck becomes an invaluable informant on the inside.

Beware a common misconception: in SatAM, Chuck does not become an organic hedgehog again. He keeps his robotic form but takes back control through sheer force of will, and remains a devoted fan of the chili dogs Sonic brings him right into his hideout.

Uncle Chuck in the Archie comics: family, science and reboot

In the Archie comics, the pre-reboot version fleshes out Sir Charles's biography: there he is the brother of Jules Hedgehog, Sonic's father, and therefore a biological uncle, as well as the favorite former student of Nate Morgan, creator of the Power Rings.

The story of the Roboticizer differs there: presented as a medical technology, the device is tested in an emergency on his brother Jules, gravely wounded during the Great War, who thus becomes the very first Robian.

In 2013, the reboot known as the Super Genesis Wave reshuffles the deck: at SEGA's behest, Charles is no longer related to Sonic by blood. One and the same character, two genealogies depending on the era of the comics.

SatAM, Archie, Sonic Underground: untangling the continuities

There is no talking about Uncle Chuck without telling his continuities apart, because they are all non-canon with regard to the current canon of the SEGA games. SatAM and Archie are two distinct licensed universes: better not to mix up their events.

The family tie alone sums up the puzzle: blood uncle in SatAM, brother of Jules in pre-reboot Archie, no longer a biological relative after 2013, and simply an adoptive uncle in Sonic Underground, another DiC series from 1999 with a different voice cast.

None of these versions is the absolute truth: each belongs to its own medium. It is precisely this profusion that made Uncle Chuck a cult character among fans, while keeping him outside today's official canon.

Why Uncle Chuck is in neither the games nor IDW

Despite his popularity, Uncle Chuck appears in no Sonic video game. He was created for the cartoon, and the characters born of the series legally belong to SEGA without ever joining the games.

He is likewise absent from the IDW continuity, the comics running since 2018, which lean on the canon of the games rather than on the Archie or SatAM legacy.

To meet him, then, you have to turn to the SatAM episodes or the old Archie issues — the only places where this old scientist goes on watching over his nephew.
