The End: Sonic Frontiers' final antagonist

Most villains in the saga want to conquer the world. The End wants the opposite: it wants nothing to exist anymore. The final antagonist of Sonic Frontiers has no name, no face, no gender — and it is indirectly because of it that the Chaos Emeralds are on Sonic's planet.

Who — or what — is The End?

The End is a cosmic entity that appeared in Sonic Frontiers, released on November 8, 2022. Its species is unknown, its age is counted in tens of thousands of years, and its real name does not exist: "The End" is the name given to it by the Ancients. It refers to itself as "the all-consuming void," and is alternately called the Abyss, the Infinite, or the Nothingness.

It is also genderless. Its voice alternates between two tones: in English, Cindy Robinson (Amy's voice) and Mike Pollock (Eggman's voice) speak its lines in tandem, which produces this unique doubled phrasing.

Writer Ian Flynn describes it as an unknowable and incomprehensible essence of malevolence, seeking to impose order on the universe — and that order is nothingness. Sonic, for his part, sums it up in his own way: for him, it's "the scary voice from the sky."

What it did to the Ancients

Tens of thousands of years ago, The End roamed the universe, annihilating countless stars, worlds, and civilizations. One day, it devoured the Ancients' home planet. Pay attention to the nuance, it matters: it was not Sonic's planet, and the destruction was not instantaneous — Ian Flynn specifies that the entity "gorged" on the world while the Ancients fled, most tribes perishing on the spot.

The survivors escaped aboard vessels powered by the Chaos Emeralds and were drawn to a larger gem, the Master Emerald, which naturally rested on a certain blue planet. This is the vertigo of Frontiers: it was The End that indirectly brought the Chaos Emeralds to Sonic. The entire series owes something to them, and they arrived there fleeing an entity that was devouring a world.

Because The End followed them. The Ancients settled on the Starfall Islands did not perish from a frontal annihilation, but from environmental upheavals caused by its attacks — a slow, gradual extinction.

The Titans, the weapon of the vanquished

Cornered, the Ancients retaliated by building four colossal machines powered by the Chaos Emeralds: the Titans. Giganto, Wyvern, Knight, and Supreme are fashioned in the image of their four lost tribes, to honor and avenge their dead. These are piloted machines, each by an Ancient: Dragon, Snake, Tiger, and Crane.

Remember this point well, because it is the most common mistake about the game: The End is not a Titan. The Titans are the weapons built against it. Supreme is neither its body nor its creature — it is its prison, before becoming its shell.

And even with four, the Titans are not enough. As a last resort, Crane sacrifices himself: he lures The End inside his own Titan, Supreme, and traps it there. Tiger then convinces Dragon and Snake not to let this sacrifice be in vain, and the three surviving pilots seal Supreme and The End in Cyber Space, on Ouranos Island — an entire reality built to serve as a cell. The Ancients never won: they bought time, and that time lasted for millennia, until a blue hedgehog arrived on the archipelago.

The final battle of Frontiers

Here is the point where many summaries are wrong: not everyone faces The End. The fight is only accessible on Hard and Extreme difficulties. On Easy and Normal, the last real fight is Supreme, and The End's sequence is reduced to a few QTEs — without even the post-credits scene. It's not a hidden boss or a secret unlock: it's a matter of difficulty.

In the base game, the confrontation comes at the cost of a sacrifice. Sage, the AI born from Eggman's calculations, uses Supreme as a shield to absorb self-destruction, whispers "take care of my father," and disappears. The post-credits scene shows Eggman rebuilding her.

The free DLC "The Final Horizon," released on September 28, 2023, completely rewrites this ending — and here's the subtlety almost everyone misses: in the DLC, Sage doesn't sacrifice herself and doesn't die. The sacrifice belongs only to the base game's narrative. Frontiers therefore literally has two versions of its own ending.

The form no one has seen

During the fight, the player faces a purple moon slightly larger than ours, surrounded by a reddish aura and riddled with cavities that form a giant eye. The image has become iconic. However, it is not The End's true form.

Game director, Morio Kishimoto, explained that the entity never shows its true appearance in Frontiers, for a rather chilling reason: it varies depending on the observer, because it manifests as each person's representation of death itself. The moon is the Japanese representation of death — so that's what the audience perceives, not what it is.

Kishimoto added a detail that the community has never quite digested: Sonic, he saw something else. He would like to explore this one day. What Sonic saw has, to this day, never been revealed.
