Jules and Bernadette "Bernie" Hedgehog are Sonic's parents in one continuity only: the Archie comics published before the 2013 reboot. Created by Ken Penders, these two former soldiers of the Kingdom of Acorn served during the Great War against the Overlanders. Fatally wounded on a mission, Jules is saved by his brother Sir Charles, known as Uncle Chuck, who puts him through his Roboticizer without knowing that Julian Kintobor has sabotaged the machine: Sonic's father becomes the first Robian, conscious but stripped of free will. Sonic finds them alive in 1997. Bernie will become organic again, Jules never.

Jules and Bernadette "Bernie" Hedgehog are Sonic's parents in the Archie comics from before the 2013 reboot, and in that continuity alone: neither the games, nor the IDW comics, nor the SatAM cartoon give them any existence. Former soldiers of the Kingdom of Acorn, they are long believed dead by their son, until a reunion published in 1997.

Who are Jules and Bernadette Hedgehog?

Jules Hedgehog and his wife Bernadette "Bernie" Hedgehog are Sonic's parents in the Sonic the Hedgehog series published by Archie Comics, and more precisely in the period before the 2013 reboot — the one reference works label "Pre-Super Genesis Wave". Both are credited to Ken Penders, and they illustrate well what the comics added to the universe without the games ever picking it up.

Their function in the story is domestic, not heroic: they are parents, their son's emotional and moral anchor. Neither Jules nor Bernadette belongs to the Freedom Fighters — the group led by Sally Acorn appears on their profiles only as an ally, their own affiliations being the Kingdom and then the Republic of Acorn, the Royal Army for their military past, and the "Hedgehog Family".

One must therefore resist the temptation to cast them as leaders of the resistance. Their notable interventions are occasional and dated — guiding people through the catacombs of Mobotropolis, a gunman neutralised, an intruder held off — nothing like the group’s field operations or the workshop work of an engineer such as Rotor.

🎭 Jules and Bernie aren't Freedom Fighters: on their profiles, Sally Acorn's group only shows up as an ally. Nobody checks your profile on the night of a costume party, though, and our Sonic costumes are there precisely so you can step into a role that isn't yours.

Before Sonic: two soldiers of the Great War

Before their son was born, Jules and Bernie serve King Acorn during the Great War, the conflict pitting the Mobians against the Overlanders, the human enemies of this continuity. The couple had met much earlier, at school, facing each other in class debates that Bernie won every time (Sonic the Hedgehog #76). Both were also students of Nate Morgan, the Overlander behind the Power Rings, at the same time as Jules's elder brother.

The most consequential fact of their military career concerns a reconnaissance mission in the Badlands: there Jules and his brother Charles find a wounded Overlander, Julian Kintobor. Charles refuses to help him, Jules insists, and the two brothers bring him back to Mobotropolis (Sonic the Hedgehog #50 and #72). The future Robotnik therefore owes his survival to Sonic's father — bearing in mind that this comic Robotnik does not map exactly onto the Eggman of the games, the original version of the villain being itself replaced during the run of the series.

The war ends up striking them head-on: during a mission, Jules is fatally wounded by an Overlander soldier, and it is Bernadette who neutralises the shooter (Sonic the Hedgehog #77). Bernie also distinguishes herself during the siege of Mobotropolis, where she and Cocoa Cat guide Mobians through the catacombs until they emerge behind enemy lines, opening the way for a counter-attack (#76). No particular power is attributed to her: these are a soldier's skills, nothing more.

The first Robian: how Jules was roboticized

Jules's wound is judged beyond the reach of the medicine available. It is his brother Sir Charles Hedgehog, the future Uncle Chuck and inventor of the Roboticizer, who decides to put him through his experimental machine to save his life. The detail is essential to understanding the tragedy: the act comes from the brother, not from the enemy.

Julian Kintobor, for his part, had sabotaged the device without Charles's knowledge. Jules therefore survives in metal form — he becomes the very first roboticized Mobian, and so the series' first Robian — but he comes out of it stripped of his free will, a flaw that will carry over to every roboticized victim after him and feed other tragedies in the series, including that of the cyborg Bunnie Rabbot.

What Jules loses is neither his memory nor his personality: he remains aware of what is happening around him, but becomes incapable of acting of his own accord. His new shell, on the other hand, gives him superhuman strength and speed — enough to knock out Tails and carry him off — and spares him both sleep and food; a line attributed to Eggman even suggests that the process should make him immortal.

🧸 The Roboticizer left Jules with a metal shell that spares him both sleep and food. You still slip under the covers every night, and that's exactly where a soft companion picked from our Sonic plushies and cuddly toys belongs, right against your pillow.

Roboticized and then restored to himself without a body of flesh, Jules is the first Robian of the Archie continuity.

The cruellest twist: Bernie roboticized by her husband

When Bernadette discovers what Julian has done, Robotnik uses his hold over Jules — his very first Robian puppet — to send him to attack and roboticize his own wife. Sonic’s father carries out the order without being able to resist it, and Bernie in turn joins the population of enslaved Robians.

The scene sums up the logic of this continuity: roboticization is not merely a weapon of war, it is an instrument for destroying families. Sonic's two parents thus spend years deprived of their will, in the tyrant’s service, while their son believes them killed in the Great War.

1997: the reunion, then two separate fates

After Robotnik's fall, the Robians recover their free will; accounts differ on the exact mechanism, one crediting a Power Ring from Charles, the other simply noting that it came back all at once. It is in Sonic Super Special #2, "Brave New World", a story by Ken Penders published in 1997, that Sonic discovers his parents alive within this freed community.

The chronology of their appearances calls for a clarification. Jules is first shown in flashback in Sonic the Hedgehog #46, where Uncle Chuck plays the Freedom Fighters the recording of the first roboticization, that of his brother — an issue whose cover is dated May 1997 while its release is recorded in February. Super Special #2 is their first appearance in the present, with the monthly following on in #53 the same year; since two release dates circulate for that Super Special, it is safer to stick to "1997".

Their fates then diverge. Bernadette becomes flesh and blood again during the general de-roboticization of the Mobians carried out by the Bem. Jules cannot be restored: reversing the process would revive the fatal injuries that had led him to the Roboticizer and would kill him. He therefore remains a robot until his last appearance, the only Robian the general restoration never gave back to himself.

🧱 For Jules, any return to his pre-Roboticizer state would be fatal: he stays a robot for good. On your table, though, taking apart a build from our Sonic LEGO sets and starting over only costs a little patience.

2013: the Super Genesis Wave reboot erases them

The couple’s last appearance is Sonic the Hedgehog #241, "Unraveling" (October 2012). Their fate is then left undetermined, and the question soon becomes moot: in 2013 the "Super Genesis Wave" reboot restarts the series from #252 on a brand-new continuity in which neither Jules nor Bernadette exists. No "Post-Super Genesis Wave" profile corresponds to them, and they reappear nowhere.

The documented trigger for this reboot is the copyright dispute between Archie Comics and Ken Penders, their creator: the publisher stopped contesting his rights at the end of 2012, which led to a sweeping revision of the series and the removal of many characters born in the comic, in favour of a cast tightened around the games. Sir Charles survives the operation and reappears as early as #254, because he comes from the cartoon and not from the comic; according to explanations reported on the fan side, a SEGA instruction ruling out family ties for game characters is said to have cost him his uncle status all the same, his "family" field remaining empty.

That leaves where not to look for them. They are absent from the video games, which never show Sonic's parents, absent from the IDW comics, and absent from the SatAM cartoon (1993), where Uncle Chuck is the only relative present on screen, as uncle and guardian. Nor should they be confused with the family from Sonic Underground (1999) — Queen Aleena, Sonia and Manic — which belongs to an entirely separate continuity.

Frequently asked questions

  • Who are Sonic's parents?
In the video games and the IDW comics, Sonic has no established family. It is only in the Archie comics from before the 2013 reboot that he has named parents: Jules Hedgehog and Bernadette "Bernie" Hedgehog, two former soldiers of the Kingdom of Acorn created by Ken Penders.
  • Is Jules really Uncle Chuck's brother?
Yes. Jules is the younger brother of Sir Charles Hedgehog, known as Uncle Chuck, the scientist who developed the Roboticizer. That is why Uncle Chuck is Sonic's biological uncle in this continuity.
  • How was Jules roboticized?
Fatally wounded by an Overlander soldier on a mission, he could not be saved by any medical treatment. His brother Charles therefore put him through his experimental Roboticizer, without knowing that Julian Kintobor, the future Robotnik, had sabotaged the machine. Jules survived in robotic form but lost his free will, while remaining aware of what was going on around him. Robotnik then used him to have Bernie roboticized.
  • Did Jules ever become normal again?
No. Bernadette regained her flesh-and-blood form during the general de-roboticization carried out by the Bem, but Jules stayed a robot: reversing the process would have revived the fatal injuries that had led him to the Roboticizer. He is the only Robian never to have been restored.
  • What happens to them after the 2013 reboot?
Nothing: they disappear. Their last appearance is Sonic the Hedgehog #241 (October 2012). The "Super Genesis Wave" reboot, which followed the copyright dispute between Archie and their creator Ken Penders, restarted the series with a cast tightened around the games, and neither Jules nor Bernie has ever reappeared. Uncle Chuck, for his part, survived the reboot.
  • Do they appear in the games, at IDW or in the cartoon?
No, in none of the three. No Sonic game shows his parents, the IDW comics do not mention them, and in the SatAM cartoon (1993) the only relative present is Uncle Chuck. Be careful, too, not to confuse them with Sonic Underground (1999), which gives Sonic an entirely different family: Queen Aleena, Sonia and Manic.
