VillainDeadly SixSonic Lost World

The smallest and the oldest of the Deadly Six is also the most formidable: Master Zik, a Zeti introduced in Sonic Lost World in 2013, founded the clan before handing command over to Zavok, whom he trained himself. The entry corrects several stubborn errors: only his head is sky blue, his body is black, he has no bird, and the 1036 years often quoted come from fan wikis. He is fought at Tropical Coast, with his staff wielded by telekinesis and fruit shields. Kirk Thornton voices him in English, Mugihito in Japanese.

The smallest, oldest, and by far the most dangerous. Master Zik is the wise old man of the Deadly Six — the master who founded the clan and personally trained the colossal Zavok. A long white mustache, a wooden staff taller than himself, and a mastery that belies his small stature.

Who is Master Zik?

Master Zik is a Zeti, a member of the Deadly Six in Sonic Lost World (2013). He is the group's elder, the archetype of the old martial arts master: calm, economical in his movements, seemingly harmless — and formidable.

Let's immediately correct a common misconception: Master Zik does not have green skin (that's Zeena). Only his head is sky blue; the rest of his body is black. He sports a long white mustache that reaches down to his feet, a single square tooth, and he is never without his wooden staff. Another useful detail: he does not have a pet bird — this is a widespread confusion, his only attribute is his staff.

The eldest of the Deadly Six, Master Zik is the smallest of the group and the most formidable in combat.

The founder, not the leader

The nuance is subtle but important. Master Zik did indeed found the Deadly Six and initially led them — but he has since handed over command to Zavok. Today, Zavok is the titular leader; Zik is the discreet mentor, the gray eminence of the clan.

A word about his age, which is often exaggerated: fan wikis claim "over 1000 years old", sometimes "1036 years old", but this figure does not appear in the official game description. It only states that he founded the group "many years ago" and that he fights "with the agility of someone much younger". We will therefore stick to what is verified: he is the elder of the Zeti, without a precise number.

Master Zik in the comics
He founded the group without ever leading it: that role falls to his pupil Zavok.

Zavok's master

Zik's true status is that of a sensei. He is the one who trained Zavok, the current leader — a pretty visual paradox, since the smallest and frailest of the six trained the most colossal. His strength comes not from size but from mastery.

He remains a sensei to the end: in the game, he tries to teach meditation to the impulsive Zazz to help him beat Sonic. A detail for curious fans: the colors of the six Zeti correspond to six of the seven Chaos Emeralds, and Zik is associated with blue — which explains the hue of his head.

His fights on Tropical Coast

We face Master Zik on Tropical Coast — not Sky Road, which is Zavok's area. On Wii U, he is fought in two stages (Zones 2 and 4); on 3DS, in Act 2, with an additional rematch in Lava Mountain alongside Zavok.

His style is that of a master: he manipulates his staff telekinetically, recalling it after throwing it, and surrounds himself with fruit shields — to open his guard, you have to lure him to a fruit press to destroy his protective apple. On 3DS, he even follows up with energy orbs that you dodge with a double jump. Don't be fooled by his small old man silhouette: this is one of the most technical fights in the clan.

His reappearances

After Lost World, Master Zik mostly continued his career on paper. He appears in Archie comics, notably the "Worlds Unite" crossover, then in IDW, where he plays a juicy role: during the Metal Virus saga, he encourages Zavok to let the Zeti's hatred mature rather than rush in, before the "Zeti Hunt!" arc. The mentor always whispers strategy into the leader's ear.

Voice-wise, he is voiced in English by Kirk Thornton — who also voices Orbot in the same game — and in Japanese by Mugihito.
