VillainIDW ComicsDr. Starline

Surge the Tenrec and Kitsunami the Fennec form the most striking antagonist duo in the IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comics, appearing from 2021 onwards. Designed as impostors meant to replace the heroes, they owe their existence to Dr. Starline, the scientist platypus who turned them into cyborgs, wiped their memories and conditioned them against Sonic. Surge, a purple-furred tenrec and not a hedgehog, combines super speed, electric powers and Wisps; Kit, an anxious and loyal fennec, shapes water constructs thanks to his Hydro Pack. Created by Ian Flynn, Evan Stanley and Mauro Fonseca, they have since spilled over into the mobile games.

What if Sonic and Tails had evil twins? That's kind of the idea behind Surge and Kit, a significant duo from recent Sonic comics. Let's discover these antagonists born from paper.

Who are Surge and Kit?

Surge the Tenrec and Kit (full name Kitsunami the Fennec) form a duo of antagonists from the IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comics, appearing from 2021 onwards. Conceived as "imposters" meant to replace the heroes, they are the dark counterparts of Sonic and Tails.

Dr. Starline's Creations

Their origin is chilling: the scientist Dr. Starline (a platypus, a villain from the comics) transformed them into cyborgs, erased their memories, and conditioned them to become weapons against Sonic and his friends.

Surge, Sonic's Counterpart

Surge is a tenrec (a small mammal, not a hedgehog!) with purple fur. Gifted with super speed and electric powers (she can also use Wisps), she is consumed by rage and vengeance — a distorted mirror of Sonic. Notably: she has since transcended the comics to appear in official mobile games.

Kit, Tails' Counterpart

Kit is a fennec fox, Surge's gentle, anxious, and loyal partner — her counterpart to Tails. His special ability: thanks to a special backpack (the "Hydro Pack"), he creates water constructs through hydrokinesis.
