Who is Dark Oak?
Dark Oak is the main antagonist of Sonic X Season 3, the famous "Metarex Saga." He is a character exclusive to the anime: he does not appear in any video game. Beneath his cybernetic armor as a armored colossus, he conceals not a robot, but a living organic body.
For here is the revelation that changes everything: Dark Oak is a Seedrian — the same species of intelligent plant aliens as Cosmo. His true name is Lucas. At the head of a massive army of bio-robots, Dark Oak scours the galaxy to steal the Planet Eggs—the jewels that contain the vital energy of each world. His ultimate goal has a name: Forestation.
The idea is as radical as it is chilling: reshape the entire universe by eliminating all life, except plants. For a plant-based people who have lost everything, it's the promise of a cosmos free from war—at the cost of annihilating everything else. For this, he commands four generals: Yellow Zelkova, Red Pine, Black Narcissus, and Pale Bay Leaf.
His True Story
Lucas's backstory explains his downfall. The Seedrians lived in peace until a lost cause war against a devastating army. Earthia wanted to flee to rebuild a life elsewhere; Lucas, a warlord, refused to abandon the fight. The couple broke apart: Earthia left with all the females.
Judging Lucas and his followers to be mad, Earthia ordered a strike that finished off their dying world. Lucas and four surviving males swore revenge: they forged cybernetic bodies using a Planet Egg, took plant names, and became the Metarex. Then they tracked Earthia's ship and massacred everyone on board—sparing only baby Cosmo.
Final Mova and Cosmo's Sacrifice
At the climax, Dark Oak merges with his last two commanders to become Final Mova, a gigantic three-headed dragon-shaped plant entity, powered by the Planet Eggs and the seven Chaos Emeralds. His power is such that Super Sonic fails to defeat him in their first encounter.
The ending is one of the saddest in the saga. To stop him, Cosmo sacrifices herself: she fuses with her own father to immobilize him. Tails, in tears, then fires the Sonic Power Cannon charged with the combined power of Super Sonic and Super Shadow, destroying Final Mova—and Cosmo with him. The little Seedrian is later reborn as a seed, entrusted to Tails. The very last shot of the series shows a flower sprouted from this seed.
