Johnny is the pirate robot who serves as Captain Whisker's second-in-command in Sonic Rush Adventure, released on Nintendo DS in September 2007. Nicknamed “the sultan of speed”, this mechanical braggart scours the seas of the Sol Dimension in search of the Jeweled Scepter. His rivalry with Sonic takes the form of seven Johnny's Races, special Sea Stages run on a waterbike, each of which yields a Chaos Emerald. He is fought once in the story, in the Pirates' Island boss duo, then again in side missions 86 and 87. Once beaten, he abandons his captain and flees, with no redemption.

Johnny is the pirate robot who serves as Captain Whisker's right-hand man in Sonic Rush Adventure, released on Nintendo DS in September 2007. Nicknamed “the sultan of speed”, he challenges Sonic on a waterbike across the seas of the Sol Dimension and stubbornly refuses to finish second.

Johnny, the “sultan of speed” who challenges Sonic

Johnny (ジョニー, Jonī) is a pirate robot who appeared in Sonic Rush Adventure, on Nintendo DS. The game and the specialist databases present him as his captain's right-hand man and as a full-fledged member of the Robot Pirates. His official nickname, “the sultan of speed”, sums up the whole character: a machine built around a single fixed idea, going faster than everyone else and making sure it shows.

His personality fits into one sentence that he repeats in every possible form: he calls himself unmatched and without a rival, and he flatly refuses to finish second. His confirmed abilities follow the same logic: super speed capable of swallowing great distances in the blink of an eye, a back-mounted jet that lets him fly, enough durability to take Sonic's Spin Attacks as well as Blaze's fire attacks, and expert waterbike handling complete with aerial tricks. His weakness is documented in black and white: his reflexes do not keep up with his speed, and he struggles to turn.

🎒 To fly, Johnny relies on his back-mounted jet; on your own back, our Sonic school bags and backpacks promise no lift-off, just your things kept snug all the way to class.

The first name causes confusion on a Sonic blog. Johnny has nothing to do with Johnny Lightfoot, the rabbit from Fleetway's Sonic the Comic, nor with Johnny Gioeli, the singer of Crush 40. He is also compared to Jet the Hawk, who likewise disputes Sonic's title of fastest in the world from aboard a vehicle, but Jet is an anti-hero of the Sonic Riders series where Johnny remains a pure antagonist. Among the hedgehog's mechanical rivals, of which Metal Sonic remains the most famous figure, he holds a far more discreet place.

On the voice side, Christopher Pellegrini plays him in English in the dub handled by 4Kids Entertainment, and Kota Nemoto in Japanese. Not to be mixed up with his captain, entrusted in English to Lonnie Hirsch.

Robot Pirates, Jeweled Scepter: where does he come from?

Sonic Rush Adventure was developed by Dimps with Sonic Team and published by Sega. Its release was spread across the autumn of 2007: mid-September in Europe, the 13th according to Wikipedia and the 14th according to other records, 18 September in North America, 27 September in Australia, then 18 October in Japan. South Korea would wait until 17 September 2009, with Nintendo publishing.

The plot unfolds on the Earth of the Sol Dimension, the world Blaze guards. Johnny lands there with the crew of Captain Whisker, flanked by the two small robots Mini & Mum, with a clear mission: to sow chaos on the seas and get hold of the Jeweled Scepter.

On his origins, it is better to stay cautious: no scene shows Johnny being built. The game's extended ending reveals that the pirate robots are the work of Dr. Eggman and his counterpart Eggman Nega, and the encyclopedias extend that parentage to Johnny himself, without any in-game quote to back it up. Nega's exact status, a counterpart from another dimension for some, a future descendant for others, is not settled by the sources either.

The seven Johnny's Races, the heart of the rivalry

The most frequent confrontation with Johnny is not a fight but a race. The Johnny's Races are special Sea Stages, seven in all, playable with Sonic only: they replace the Special Stages of the other episodes. Sonic rides the Wave Cyclone, the waterbike built by Tails, while Johnny races on his own machine. Each victory yields a Chaos Emerald, and the seven together contribute to unlocking the true final boss and the true ending.

The trigger goes through the Sea Chart: while sailing, passing through a Goal gate with no text marks the chart with Johnny's face, and Tails then asks the player whether he accepts the challenge. The very first race starts automatically on the way to Coral Cave. Once cleared, the seven events remain replayable at the Viking Cup, by talking to Norman.

In a race, the robot does not simply charge ahead. He boosts, leaving behind yellow trails that the player can use to speed up in turn, drops red mines and fires green missiles. His overconfidence has a price: if he boosts straight into Sonic, he is the one who takes heavy damage.

The first encounter sets the tone. Aboard the Ocean Tornado, Johnny challenges Sonic, but Marine showers him with taunts until he agrees to challenge her instead — then she sends Sonic to race in her place, to the robot's astonishment.

Pirates' Island, the only two-boss fight

The real confrontation has a name: “Captain Whisker and Johnny”, the game's seventh boss, in the Pirates' Island level. It is the only fight in Sonic Rush Adventure where two bosses are faced at the same time, and it can be played with either Sonic or Blaze.

The pair share the work. Johnny tilts his head and charges, while Whisker chains ground pounds with a shock wave, arms fired like rockets and flaming breath. Then comes the combined attack: Whisker hurls Johnny, who ricochets at high speed in a green and white aura and has to be pushed back with a spin. Finally a spiked wheel sweeps the platforms. They are hurt with the Spin Jump and the Axel Jump, and the fight only ends when both health gauges are empty.

💡 Hurled by Whisker on Pirates' Island, Johnny ricochets at high speed in a green and white aura; on your bedside table, our Sonic lamps and night lights give off a far calmer glow, with no spiked wheel sweeping across your room.

Two details set this boss apart from the rest of the game: along with the Ghost Titan, it is the only one where the health gauges never regenerate, and Blaze, though immune to fire, still suffers from Whisker's flamethrower. Beware, though, of where this fight sits in the progression: it is not the final one. That falls to the Ghost Titan, then, with the seven Chaos Emeralds and the seven Sol Emeralds, to the Egg Wizard faced by Super Sonic and Burning Blaze.

There is a second round. Once the Ghost Titan is beaten, Gardon entrusts Blaze with Mission 86 on Southern Island: the duo has been strengthened and must be defeated once again. The reward is the turquoise Sol Emerald, not to be confused with the Chaos Emeralds from the races.

A second-in-command without loyalty, an escape without redemption

The hierarchical link between the two pirates is a late reveal: the game waits a long time before establishing that Johnny serves under Whisker. During the first races, nothing indicates that he belongs to a crew. He eventually acknowledges his captain's authority, but without pleasure: he does not like being held back and is not entirely loyal to him.

The Pirates' Island defeat confirms it. Beaten by Sonic and Blaze, Johnny flees and leaves Whisker behind, with the sole justification that his own defeat would devastate every lover of speed. His betrayal is a matter of ego, not a change of side: he never joins the heroes and his alignment stays that of an antagonist.

That leaves the question of his fate. No cutscene shows either his survival or his destruction: the game lets him vanish after his escape. The encyclopedias infer that he is still racing somewhere on this Earth, relying on the races that remain playable and on the Mission 86 rematch, but that continuity is a deduction, not a scene.

Whisker's second-in-command, Johnny ends up turning on him without ever changing sides out of conviction.

Archie, IDW, Speed Simulator: his other lives

Sonic Rush Adventure is his only appearance in a classic Sonic game, which does not mean he has disappeared elsewhere. At Archie Comics, before the Super Genesis Wave, he steps in in Sonic the Hedgehog #180, “High Stakes on the High Seas”: there he serves Eggman Nega alone and steals a green Chaos Emerald from Marine.

After the Super Genesis Wave, he returns in Sonic Universe #57-58, “Pirate Plunder Panic”. There he steals a Sol Emerald from Bean the Dynamite and Bark the Polar Bear, who had themselves taken it from Captain Metal, then hands it over to Whisker. These issues belong to a separate editorial continuity and have no equivalent in the games.

At IDW he does not appear: he is only mentioned by a pirate robot in Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2022, “Guardians”, which hints that Whisker, Johnny and Min and Mum have vanished or been destroyed — without anything being confirmed. His absence, on the other hand, is clear from the Sonic films, the Netflix series Sonic Prime and the Storybook episodes, Secret Rings and Black Knight.

The character has resurfaced recently. He has become playable in Sonic Speed Simulator, as a free reward at tier 30 of the season 19 Fast Pass, an arrival announced for 11 April 2026 and relayed by The Sonic Stadium. He is also said to be planned as a character card in Sonic Blitz, but that game was pulled from its soft launch in February 2026 before being relaunched as “Sonic Blitz 2.0”, an action RPG: its roster remains uncertain.

Frequently asked questions

  • How many times do you fight Johnny?
Twice: the “Captain Whisker and Johnny” duo at Pirates' Island, the game's seventh boss, playable with Sonic or Blaze, then a rematch in Blaze's Mission 86. The seven Johnny's Races are races, not boss fights.
  • What does a victory over Johnny bring?
Each race won gives a Chaos Emerald, seven in total, which contribute to unlocking the true final boss and the true ending. The Mission 86 rematch, for its part, yields the turquoise Sol Emerald.
  • Who built Johnny?
The sources attribute him to Dr. Eggman and Eggman Nega, whom the extended ending reveals to be behind the pirate robots. No scene, however, shows him being built, and at Archie he serves only Eggman Nega: caution is called for.
  • What becomes of Johnny at the end of the game?
Defeated, he flees and abandons Captain Whisker, convinced that his defeat would devastate every lover of speed. No scene shows his destruction or his survival: the game does not say what becomes of him.
  • Does Johnny appear outside Sonic Rush Adventure?
Yes, even though that is his only appearance in a classic Sonic game. He exists at Archie Comics, he is simply mentioned at IDW in the Annual 2022, and he arrived in Sonic Speed Simulator in April 2026. No appearance in the films, Sonic Prime or the Storybook series.
