Who is Mimic?

Mimic is an anthropomorphic shapeshifting octopus, an original character from IDW Sonic comics created by Ian Flynn and Evan Stanley. He debuts in the miniseries Tangle & Whisper (2019), where he is the main antagonist. Not to be confused with the small octopus badnik from classic games: here, he is a villain in his own right.

This is the detail that makes Mimic interesting: his power is strong, but imperfect. Three limitations frame it, often overlooked. First, he can only imitate people he has already met: it's impossible to invent an appearance from scratch. Second, his disguise is purely cosmetic: he copies neither the abilities nor the weapons of his targets.

Finally, a flaw always betrays him: his eyes remain dark brown in all his forms. A careful observer can therefore unmask him. Mimic is not an all-powerful shapeshifter; he is a brilliant but fallible impostor, which makes his face-offs much tenser.

Duo the Cat and his Masks

His most famous cover is "Duo the Cat", a cat he impersonates during the Clean Sweep saga. An amusing detail for connoisseurs: this "Duo" is just a recolor of his former teammate Slinger the ocelot, with added ear tufts — Mimic literally recycles the faces of those he betrayed.

This kind of infiltration is his specialty: slipping into enemy ranks under a false face to sabotage from within. An enemy you never see coming, as he literally wears the face of an ally.

His Appearances

After Tangle & Whisper, Mimic returns in the miniseries "Bad Guys" (2020), where Dr. Starline recruits a team of villains: alongside Mimic, we find Zavok and the duo Rough & Tumble. A chronological clarification: Mimic has no role in the Metal Virus saga, as he was imprisoned at the time; "Bad Guys" takes place afterwards.
