Who is Eggman Nega?

Eggman Nega first appeared in Sonic Rush (2005). Physically, he is a darker doppelganger of Dr. Eggman: grey mustache, bright red nose, black military uniform. His outwardly polite character hides a much more cruel and unbalanced personality — to the point of sometimes wanting to destroy the entire world, including himself.

In Sonic Rush (2005) and Sonic Rush Adventure (2007), Eggman Nega is presented as Dr. Eggman's interdimensional counterpart, who came from Blaze's original dimension — the Sol Dimension — to Sonic's world, where he teams up with Dr. Eggman.

The Sonic Rivals Origin Story

But in the Sonic Rivals series (2006-2007), everything changes: Eggman Nega is described as a descendant of Dr. Eggman, from the future — the same future as Silver. Consumed by resentment (he believes Eggman ruined the Robotnik lineage's reputation), he captures Dr. Eggman, disguises himself as him, and uses a device that turns beings into cards to dominate the world.

One Truth Only?

So, interdimensional counterpart or descendant from the future? The two games contradict each other, and this inconsistency has never been resolved within the games themselves. Outside the games, producer Takashi Iizuka has decided: there would only be one Eggman Nega, a descendant from the future who traveled to Blaze's dimension. (An explanation to be taken with a grain of salt, as it comes from a peripheral statement and not from the games.)

Unlike Dr. Eggman, whose main rival is Sonic, Eggman Nega primarily clashes with Blaze the Cat and Silver the Hedgehog. In Sonic Rivals 2, he even unleashes a fire creature, the Ifrit... before finding himself trapped in its dimension.
