Sally Acorn, Leader of Sonic's Freedom Fighters

A princess in a denim vest who hacks Robotnik's machines and leads the resistance: Sally Acorn is the leader of the Freedom Fighters, one of the best-loved heroines in the whole Sonic universe. A central character in the 1993 cartoon and in the comics — but, careful, never in the video games.

Who is Sally Acorn?

Princess Sally Alicia Acorn comes from two Western Sonic continuities — and never from the games. First the 1993 “Sonic the Hedgehog” cartoon, nicknamed “SatAM”; then, above all, the Archie comics, where she was a central character for some twenty years.

One important point to make right away: Sally does not exist in the Sonic video games, nor in the current IDW comics. An amusing detail: the North American manual for Sonic CD once called Amy Rose “Princess Sally” by mistake — but Amy and Sally are two distinct characters.

Her species, on the other hand, has been up for debate from the start: most often presented as a chipmunk, she has also been described as a squirrel or a hybrid. The question has never been settled on screen.

The leader of the Freedom Fighters

Sally is the leader and tactical brain of the Knothole Freedom Fighters, the resistance that fights Dr. Robotnik after the fall of Mobotropolis. She is the one who plans the missions, coordinates the team and hacks enemy systems — often letting Sonic pass for the “leader”.

That is the whole appeal of their duo: where Sonic charges in head first, Sally analyses and anticipates. The head and the legs. At her side in the cartoon: Bunnie Rabbot, Antoine, Rotor, Tails, and the dragon Dulcy in season 2. That same continuity also features Sir Charles Hedgehog, known as “Uncle Chuck”, Sonic's scientist uncle.

In the franchise's vast bestiary, that tactical rigour stands out against far more instinctive heroines such as Sticks.

NICOLE, her pocket AI

Sally's signature is NICOLE, her pocket computer fitted with artificial intelligence. In the cartoon, it is a small holographic handheld that hacks, scans the environment and projects plans.

At Archie, NICOLE takes on a whole other scale: she becomes a sentient AI, then “Nicole the Holo-Lynx”, able to materialise in a lynx body, and guardian of the city of New Mobotropolis. Careful not to mix things up: that lynx form belongs to the comics, not to the cartoon.

Her romance with Sonic

Sally is Sonic's main love interest in these continuities — the famous “Sonally” couple, an on-off relationship that shapes many episodes and arcs. The cartoon actually ends on that thread: in the very last episode, after Robotnik's defeat, Sonic and Sally share a spontaneous kiss.

The series was cancelled on that budding romance and a cliffhanger that was never resolved: there was never a season 3. That is largely what fed fans' attachment to the character — a story left hanging.

Mecha Sally, her darkest arc

Sally's most striking arc is exclusive to the Archie comics. While trying to sabotage a machine that threatened to roboticize everyone, Sally is herself roboticized and becomes Mecha Sally: a mechanical enforcer stripped of free will, turned against her own friends.

Eggman had understood that she was the key to Sonic's victories: turning her into one of his most fearsome soldiers was a terrible blow. She is finally restored in a later arc. A dark passage that shows just how much, in the comics, Sally carries the emotional weight of the story.
