Belle the Tinkerer, la bricoleuse des comics Sonic

Belle the Tinkerer, the handywoman of Sonic comics

1084 mots | Temps de lecture : 5 minute(s)

She looks like a Pinocchio puppet, but she's a robot with a soul. Belle the Tinkerer is one of the most endearing heroines in IDW comics: a shy wooden tinkerer, built by a mysterious "Mr. Tinker" who is none other than amnesiac Dr. Eggman. Her search for a lost father is one of the saga's most touching arcs.

Who is Belle?

Belle is an original character from IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comics, appearing in 2020 (issue 33) and created by writer-artist Evan Stanley. She does not exist in the video games. Her appearance evokes a wooden puppet, but beware of the trap: Belle is not a living puppet; she is a robot.

More precisely, a Badnik with free will: a metallic skeleton covered with an oak wood shell, which gives her her puppet-like appearance. Sega also requested that jawlines be added to her face to clearly indicate to the reader that she is a machine, not an animal. Shy, gentle, terribly clumsy, and a convinced pacifist, she has a "soul" and real emotions – something almost unique among Eggman's creations.

Mr. Tinker, a father named Eggman

Belle's entire story lies in this connection. After the events of Sonic Forces, Dr. Eggman lost his memory and lives peacefully in Windmill Village under the name of "Mr. Tinker," a kind repairman. He built Belle from Badnik parts, as a little assistant – and she worships him as a father, calling him "papa."

The nod is charming: "Mr. Tinker" and "Belle" refer to Tinker Bell from Peter Pan. But the tenderness of this beginning makes what follows all the more cruel: Belle initially doesn't know that her beloved father is, in reality, the planet's greatest tyrant.

Driven out, then taken in

The drama erupts when Eggman's memory returns. The doctor, back to his old self, unleashes the Metal Virus upon the world. Belle, however, is immune – because she is a robot, and the virus only affects living beings. But the villagers, panicked, accuse her of being an Eggman spy, destroy everything Mr. Tinker had built, and drive her out.

Wandering alone in the forest, Belle takes refuge in an abandoned Eggman base, where Sonic and Tails take her in. She then joins the Restoration, the organization rebuilding the world, and forms a deep friendship with Tangle the Lemur. From a lonely wooden thread, she gradually becomes a heroine in her own right.

Her tinkering talents

Her name says it all: Belle is a "Tinkerer," an unparalleled tinkerer. Her fingers conceal tools; she picks locks, effortlessly reads Eggman's encryptions, connects to his networks, and reprograms robots. She repairs Omega as well as Metal Sonic, and even Whisper's Variable Wispon.

But her most precious singularity is not a weapon: it's her authentic emotions, those that Eggman never managed to replicate in his machines. A chilling detail from the IDW universe: it is precisely Belle's emotional "code" that Dr. Starline will copy to program the personalities of Surge and Kit.

A robot like no other

Belle has some delightful peculiarities. The most famous: when her tail is pulled – an orange string ending in a pompom – she triggers an automatic reflex kick, a gag she eventually exploits for boosted jumps (and which surprised both Sonic and Starline). Her big round nose, meanwhile, squeaks when pressed, which greatly embarrasses her.

Her greatest weakness lies in her material: being made of wood, Belle has a very legitimate fear of fire. She also hates flying and refuses to fight: a heroine who prefers to repair the world rather than combat it.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is Belle a living puppet or a robot?
A robot: a Badnik with free will, with a metallic skeleton and a wooden body. Her puppet-like appearance is misleading — hence the jawlines added at Sega's request.
  • Who is "Mr. Tinker"?
He is the amnesiac Dr. Eggman, who took refuge in Windmill Village after Sonic Forces. He builds Belle and becomes her father figure; she calls him "papa" without knowing who he truly is.
  • Does Belle appear in the Sonic games?
No. She is an exclusive character to the IDW comics. She is only hinted at visually in the official TailsTube animation.
  • Why is Belle immune to the Metal Virus?
Because she is a robot, and the virus only contaminates living beings. This immunity, however, leads to her being wrongly accused of being an Eggman spy.
  • What is the connection between Belle and Surge and Kit?
Dr. Starline copies Belle's emotional "code" — her authentic emotions — to program the personalities of Surge and Kit.
