The Nocturnus Clan and the Twilight Cage
Shade belongs to the Nocturnus Clan, an ancient echidna clan distinct from Knuckles's. Nearly 4,000 years ago, this clan was banished to a prison dimension, the Twilight Cage. It is from there that they attempt to escape, under the orders of their leader, Imperator Ix.
The connection with Knuckles
This is the character's appeal: Knuckles believed himself to be the last of the echidnas. The revelation of Shade — and of a whole hidden echidna people — completely shakes him. The two characters thus share the theme of being "the last of their kind," which creates a strong bond between them.

From enemy to ally
Initially an adversary, Shade changes sides when Imperator Ix's true lust for conquest is revealed. After Ix betrays her, it is Knuckles who saves her, sealing her alliance with Sonic. At the end of the adventure, she becomes the first echidna of the Nocturnus Clan to permanently leave the Twilight Cage.
In combat, she favors the clan's tactics and technology (the famous "Leech Blades," energy blades) rather than brute force.

A missing character
A rare occurrence: Shade has never reappeared since 2008. The reason is a legal dispute (the Ken Penders case) surrounding the characters of Sonic Chronicles, which effectively made Shade and the Nocturnus Clan unusable — the game being also considered non-canonical. This doesn't stop fans from remembering the character.
