Deputy sheriff of Green Hills, Wade Whipple is the most consistent human character in the film continuity after the Wachowski family. Played by Adam Pally, he appears from the very first film in 2020, serves as acting sheriff in the second, then in 2024 lands the co-lead role in the series Knuckles on Paramount+, where the red echidna sets out to turn him into a warrior. His comic appeal rests on the gap between the seriousness of the situations and his naivety, but the script ends up entrusting him with genuine acts of bravery.
Wade Whipple is the Green Hills sheriff's deputy in the film continuity of Sonic the Hedgehog produced by Paramount. A supporting character in all three films, he becomes the second lead of the spin-off series devoted to Knuckles.

Who is Wade Whipple?
Wade Whipple is a human, a deputy at the Green Hills Sheriff's Department, the police station of the small town where Sonic lands. There he serves under Tom Wachowski, who is also his friend off duty — the two men share ice-fishing trips, among other things.
🎣 Ice fishing, the pastime Wade shares with Tom off duty, is no place for a bare head: for your own outings in freezing weather, our Sonic beanies keep your ears warm.
The role is played by American actor Adam Pally. A tasty detail: Pally was among the actors considered for the role of Tom before James Marsden was cast. The character was also meant to be called Billy Robb in the early versions of the script.
His writing rests on a deliberate contrast: a permanent naivety, a tendency to panic as soon as Tom is no longer there to make the decisions, and a chronic inability to detect his superior's sarcasm. This comic register does not stop the story from entrusting him with an act of courage in every film.
His arc across the three films
In the first film, a power outage hits Green Hills and Wade calls Tom to find out what to do; he loses track of the instructions and sticks to the first one, stay relaxed. Questioned shortly afterwards by Doctor Robotnik, he refuses to believe that Tom is capable of what he is accused of. At the climax, he is the one who fires a warning shot at the Eggpod to cover his superior.
The second film promotes him: with Tom away on holiday, Wade takes over as acting sheriff, which puts him back at the centre of Robotnik's schemes. The third film, on the other hand, gives him his smallest amount of screen time in the whole series.
⭐ Wade only held the sheriff's post while Tom was away on holiday; sewn onto your jacket, a patch never hands its spot back when the regular officer returns, and our Sonic patches stay put long after the acting stint is over.
He therefore orbits permanently around the family that takes Sonic in, and crosses paths with the same antagonists as Doctor Robotnik's assistant. To situate each feature film in relation to the others, one can refer to the overview of the saga on the big screen.
Co-lead of the Knuckles series
In April 2024, Paramount+ released Knuckles, a series of six episodes set between the second and the third film. Wade is no longer a supporting player there: he shares the billing with the echidna, voiced by Idris Elba, in an unlikely-duo story.
The starting point is mundane: Wade has just been thrown out of his bowling team, the Renegades. Knuckles then sets about training him in the ways of the echidna warriors, and the two set off for Reno so that Wade can compete in the bowling champions tournament, chased along the way by bounty hunters.
The series also digs into his family: a sister, Wanda, with whom he keeps up a fierce sibling rivalry, a mother, Wendy, and a father, Pete, who walked out on his family years earlier. The episode The Shabbat Dinner reveals that the Whipple family is Jewish, a rare case of a real-world religion in the Sonic universe. In it the character forms with the guardian of the Master Emerald a friendship that becomes the driving force of the story.

Behind the clumsiness, the writing places a childhood wound: his father's abandonment, which took place in a department store, explains Wade's insecurity and his disproportionate reaction whenever he is mocked. His training with Knuckles consists precisely in turning that flaw into confidence.
The character also collects film references — his childhood bedroom is covered in them — and serves as a recurring comic relay, including in scenes cut during editing. On the human side, he rounds out the gallery of characters specific to the big screen found around the owl who raised Sonic.
