Who is Vanilla the Rabbit?
Vanilla the Rabbit is an anthropomorphic rabbit from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, known above all as the mother of Cream. A tall rabbit with cream-coloured fur and floppy ears, she plays the role of the saga's “maternal figure” rather than that of a heroine.
An accomplished homemaker, she lives in a cottage with a flourishing Chao Garden and embodies a rare facet of the universe: that of the ordinary citizen, with no mission and no superpower. It is from her that her daughter gets her politeness and good manners.

First appearance and debut
Vanilla debuts in Sonic Advance 2, on Game Boy Advance, in 2002 — her very first medium, across every continuity. She is introduced there at the same time as her daughter and the Chao Cheese.
The game was developed by Dimps and Sonic Team and published by Sega. A collector's detail: Vanilla, Cream and Cheese are the first new characters in the series to be introduced on a Nintendo console.
Personality and “powers”
In terms of character, Vanilla is calm, composed and polite, gentle but strictly disciplined; she prefers a quiet life and is easily thrown by the adventurous spirit of Sonic and his friends. Like the placid angler Big the Cat, she is one of those peaceful characters who anchor the saga far from the action.
As for “powers”, there are none: she is an ordinary citizen with no combat ability whatsoever, a good cook above all. Her only recurring trait, often played for laughs, is her knack for intimidating certain villains such as the duo Rough and Tumble, or even the seasoned thief Rouge the Bat.
Family and household
Vanilla's central relationship is the one she has with Cream, her only daughter: unconditional love coupled with a tendency to overprotect, tempered by permission to go adventuring under Sonic's supervision. The household also counts two Chao that must not be confused: Cheese, Cream's companion, and Chocola, both Cheese's brother and Vanilla's companion — two Chao, then, neither rabbits nor her children.
The household is also watched over by the guardian robot Gemerl, taken in by the family once repaired. As a nod, Vector the Crocodile of Team Chaotix seems to have a soft spot for her.

Across the games, Vanilla remains a non-playable support character. In Sonic Advance 2, she serves as a plot device: kidnapped by Dr. Eggman, she is found again after his defeat, then kidnapped a second time in space and rescued in mid-flight by Sonic.
In Sonic Advance 3, the family finds Gemerl damaged and Vanilla welcomes him into her cottage once Tails has repaired him. In Sonic Rush, she keeps Blaze for a cup of tea, points her towards Sonic and lets Cream and Cheese go with her.

Vanilla in other media and her voice actors
Outside the games, Vanilla has a notable role in the anime Sonic X: separated from Cream by a Chaos Control, she is reunited with her on Earth by a second Chaos Control, then settles into the Thorndyke mansion, where she houses the alien Cosmo for a time. These elements are specific to the anime and appear neither in the games nor in the comics.
She also appears in the Archie and IDW comics (the Metal Virus arc, where her absolute priority is Cream's safety). On the dubbing side, Japanese actress Sayaka Aoki voices both Vanilla and Cream; the English anime gives the role to Rebecca Honig, and the recent English voice is Jenny Yokobori (The Chaotix Casefiles, 2026).
