VillainDeadly SixMoon Mech
In the very first minutes of Sonic Lost World, a fluorescent pink Zeti charges at the hedgehog howling with laughter: Zazz kicks things off. Turquoise tongue, purple crest and a deranged stare, he embodies pure madness within the Deadly Six, a species Takashi Iizuka wanted to call “oni” before SEGA of America turned it down. His signature mount, the crescent-moon Moon Mech, comes back in Zone 4 and then in the Lava Mountain boss rush. Master Zik tries in vain to teach him meditation.
He kicks things off. The very first boss in Sonic Lost World, the one who charges at Sonic, laughing hysterically in the opening minutes, is none other than: Zazz, the most unstable member of a clan of six horned demons. The punk of the group, unable to sit still — and unable to tolerate boredom.
Summary
Who is Zazz?
Zazz is a Zeti, the species that makes up the Deadly Six — the antagonistic clan from Sonic Lost World, released in 2013 on Wii U and 3DS. The Zeti originate from the Lost Hex and are inspired by the oni, the horned demons of Japanese folklore. A delightful creation anecdote: producer Takashi Iizuka literally wanted to call the species "oni," but SEGA of America rejected the term — hence the invented name "Zeti."
In terms of looks, Zazz is a lanky, gangly figure. The upper part of his body is fluorescent pink, the lower half black from the waist down; he has two striped horns framing a purple Mohawk, and constantly displays a long turquoise tongue and a demented expression. He's the "metalhead" of the group, whose appearance perfectly matches his behavior.

The Deadly Six and Eggman's Conch
To understand Zazz, you need to understand the crux of Lost World. Upon arriving on the Lost Hex, Dr. Eggman doesn't recruit the Zeti: he enslaves them, using a spiky purple artifact, the Cacophonic Conch. Its booming sound neutralizes the Zeti's powers and forces them to obey in pain.
Zazz is the very first to encounter Sonic, in Windy Hill, sent into battle to cover the doctor's escape. But when Sonic destroys the conch, everything changes: the Deadly Six break free, turn Eggman's robot army against him, and become the game's true threat. One point to absolutely remember: Zazz is not the leader. The leader is Zavok; Zazz is merely the first soldier sent forward.

Each Deadly Six embodies an exaggerated trait, and Zazz is pure madness. Hyperactive, unpredictable, with berserker violence, he screams incessantly, moves erratically, and laughs maniacally. His obsession? Boredom. He rages the moment he's prevented from fighting.
This unpredictability is both his strength and his weakness: he attacks illogically, making him difficult to anticipate, but he also rushes headfirst into traps. Master Zik, the elder of the clan, even tries to teach him meditation to help him overcome Sonic — a lost cause, to say the least.
The Moon Mech and His Battles
Like all Zeti, Zazz shares the species' collective power: magnetic field manipulation, which allows them to take control of robots — so this isn't a talent unique to him. In close combat, he's fast, clawed, and projects salvos of pink energy in a "V" shape.
His signature weapon is the Moon Mech, a crescent moon-shaped device. You face him several times: at the end of Windy Hill Zone 2, where the mech rains down stars; in Zone 4, in a chase where he throws the device between platforms; then in a rematch during the Lava Mountain boss rush. A detail for connoisseurs: Zazz is the only boss in the game where Sonic has no Wisps at the start — the Red Burst, very effective against him, is only unlocked during their second encounter.

His Reappearances
Zazz has traveled much more than one might think. His very first playable appearance isn't in a platforming game but in Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games… in table tennis. He then reappears as a surprise boss in Sonic Dash, in the "Zazz Raid" event in Sonic Runners, and is playable in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle.
In print, he plays a significant role in the IDW comics: introduced during the Metal Virus saga on his Moon Mech, he returns to the forefront in the "Zeti Hunt!" arc, when Zavok gathers the six for revenge. A clarification that cuts short a common confusion: Zazz does not appear in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. The Deadly Six are, in terms of games, exclusive bosses to Lost World.
