CharacterSonic '06Soleanna

Princess Elise III is the human ruler of Soleanna and the heroine of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). Seventeen years old and the last heir of the royal family, she carries a secret: her father, the Duke of Soleanna, sealed Iblis in her soul with the white Chaos Emerald, forbidding her to cry. Mephiles the Dark kills Sonic before her eyes to draw out those tears; the seal gives way and the god Solaris is reborn. In the Last Story, Elise revives the hedgehog with the seven Chaos Emeralds, then blows out the flame of Solaris ten years earlier, erasing the entire adventure.

Princess Elise III is the human ruler of Soleanna and the female lead of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), the series' 15th anniversary game. In it, her father sealed Iblis, the Flames of Disaster, in her soul, forbidding her to cry.

Who is Princess Elise III?

Princess Elise the Third, called “Princesse Elise III” in the French texts, is a human and not an anthropomorphic character. The detail matters in a series full of bipedal hedgehogs and foxes: she is 17 years old, she reigns, and she is the only living member of the royal family of the principality of Soleanna.

This is also the source of the most common confusion about her. Amy Rose, a pink anthropomorphic hedgehog, is her friend in the game, not a rival; Blaze the Cat, an anthropomorphic cat tied to the Sol Emeralds, is also referred to there as a “princess”. All three characters appear in the same title, hence the recurring mix-ups.

Her arc begins and ends in a single game: Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), the franchise's fifteenth anniversary title, universally nicknamed Sonic '06. She has never reappeared since as a playable or narrative character; everything else amounts to a mention or a cameo.

Princess Elise III
Ruler of Soleanna, Elise carries within her the seal that has held Iblis since the Solaris Project accident.

Soleanna, the city of water

Soleanna is described in game, in a line from Rouge in Shadow's episode, as the “city of water”: an island city-state with a constitutional monarchy whose main industries are tourism and precision engineering. Elise is named there as the reigning ruler.

🌊 Soleanna, the “city of water”, is an island city that lives off tourism: when you're the tourist by the water, the first thing to do is lay one of our Sonic beach and bath towels out on the sand.

A point of protocol that often gets mangled: in Soleanna the sovereigns hold the titles of Duke, Duchess and Princess, never King or Queen. Elise presides over the Festival of the Sun, a celebration held in honour of the sun god worshipped by the city.

This cult has a scientific counterpart. Elise's father, the Duke of Soleanna, led the Solaris Project, research into the sun god that turned into a catastrophe and cost him his life. The accident left behind the two halves of the entity: Iblis, the bestial, blazing part, and Mephiles, the shadow part that Shadow locks away elsewhere, the fusion of the two restoring Iblis and Solaris to their original unity.

The seal of Iblis and the ban on crying

Mortally struck by the failure of his project, the Duke makes the decision that defines the whole character: he seals Iblis, the Flames of Disaster, in his daughter's soul, by means of the white Chaos Emerald. The condition of the seal fits in one sentence, which he leaves her as a final instruction: she must never cry, for her tears would break it.

So Elise grows up as a ruler with a facade of optimism, required to smile while the fire monster sleeps inside her. The game does not stop there when it comes to paradox: in the cutscene “The Talisman”, Silver leaves the blue Chaos Emerald with Elise as a child.

The two gems should not be confused: the white one serves the seal, the blue one is the one Elise keeps and then entrusts to Sonic at the start of the adventure. Since it was a traveller from the future who left it with her, the causal chain closes on itself, one of the many temporal knots in the plot.

Elise and Sonic: hostage, yellow aura and smiles

The engine of the story is a kidnapping on repeat. Eggman wants both her Chaos Emerald and the Flames of Disaster she harbours, and captures her again and again. The princess is not passive for all that: she ends up throwing herself from the Egg Mobile rather than become a prisoner again.

Elise possesses a “hidden power” that the game never bothers to explain. Combined with Sonic's, it produces the Energy Field: a yellow aura that surrounds the two characters when the hedgehog carries her, lets them run over water and quicksand without sinking in and hurt enemies on contact. The mechanic does not make them invincible and stays confined to the Princess Stages, Dusty Desert and Tropical Jungle.

👟 In Dusty Desert and Tropical Jungle, the Energy Field only lets Sonic run over quicksand without sinking in while he carries Elise; on your own sidewalk there's nobody to carry, just a pair of Sonic shoes to slip on before you head out.

In terms of relationships, the contrast between the characters is stark. Sonic mainly keeps telling her to smile, while Amy Rose protects her and gives her advice about love without either of them knowing who the other is talking about — the game shows no rivalry between the two.

Elise and Sonic
Their relationship runs through the whole game and remains one of the most debated writing choices in the series.

The tears, the death of Sonic and the kiss

One antagonist understands exactly where the weak point lies. Mephiles kills Sonic before Elise's eyes, precisely in order to make her cry. Grief makes the seal give way: Iblis is released, merges with Mephiles, and the god Solaris is put back together.

The Last Story turns the situation around. Elise brings Sonic back to life using the Chaos Emeralds gathered in full, a ritual she completes with a kiss. The hedgehog reappears straight away in his Super Sonic form to face Solaris.

It is the most commented on and most mocked passage in the game, but it is worth describing for what it is: the culmination of the ritual of the seven emeralds, not a romance made official by Sega. Even Eggman becomes at this point an ally of circumstance, the divine threat coming before his ambitions.

The flame blown out: what the ending erases, and what it does not

The resolution is a deliberate erasure. Sonic and Elise are sent ten years into the past, to the flame of the sun god, and the princess blows it out like a candle. Solaris then never exists, so neither does Iblis nor Mephiles, and the events of the game never take place. In the final scene, Elise feels a familiar breeze as Sonic goes past, without ever having met him.

🎂 Sent ten years into the past, Elise blows out the flame of the sun god like a candle and the adventure never happens. When it's your turn to blow out your own candles, our Sonic birthday supplies dress up the table around the cake, and nothing gets erased.

What the ending erases is Solaris, its two halves and the adventure — not Elise, who goes on existing. The game's canonical status, on the other hand, has never been settled: Sega has not declared Sonic '06 “non-canon”, and the phrase “canon but erased” is a fan reading, just like the idea that only Sonic and Elise would remember everything. In 2024, Sonic x Shadow Generations has Big the Cat say that he got lost with Froggy in the castle of Soleanna and met the princess there, while also bringing back a Mephiles that Shadow does not recognise.

Elsewhere, the harvest is thin. In the pre-reboot Archie comics, Elise never appears in person: she is only mentioned in a data file and in the comic's encyclopaedia. No sourced appearance at IDW, nor in Sonic X, Sonic Boom or Sonic Prime. A 2023 Sonic Channel short story shows her with Silver at an ice rink in Soleanna, but in an alternate world produced by a Phantom Ruby prototype.

On the production side, she is voiced by Lacey Chabert in English and Maaya Sakamoto in Japanese; there is no French dub of Sonic '06, only subtitles. Her assigned theme is “My Destiny ~Theme of Elise~”, sung by Donna De Lory to a composition by Mariko Nanba — not to be confused with the game's main theme, “His World”.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is Princess Elise an anthropomorphic character like Amy or Blaze?
No. Elise is a human, the ruler of Soleanna. Amy Rose is an anthropomorphic hedgehog and her friend in the game; Blaze the Cat, also called a “princess”, is an anthropomorphic cat tied to the Sol Emeralds. All three appear in Sonic '06, hence the confusion.
  • Why must Elise not cry?
Because her father, the Duke of Soleanna, sealed Iblis, the Flames of Disaster, in her soul with the white Chaos Emerald after the failure of the Solaris Project. Her tears break the seal. Mephiles the Dark kills Sonic before her eyes precisely in order to draw them out.
  • What exactly happens with the famous kiss?
In the Last Story, Sonic is dead. Elise revives him with the seven Chaos Emeralds and completes the ritual with a kiss; Sonic comes back at once in his Super Sonic form to face Solaris. The scene belongs to the ritual of the emeralds, not to a romance made official by Sega.
  • Has Elise's story been erased, and is Sonic '06 still canon?
Taken ten years into the past, Elise blows out the flame of Solaris: the god never exists, so neither does Iblis nor Mephiles, and the adventure does not take place. Elise herself still exists. Sega has never declared the game “non-canon”: the phrase “canon but erased” is a fan reading.
  • Who voices Elise, and has she appeared in other games?
Lacey Chabert in English and Maaya Sakamoto in Japanese; there is no French dub of Sonic '06. Her theme is “My Destiny ~Theme of Elise~”, sung by Donna De Lory. Sonic '06 remains her only playable or narrative appearance, with Big the Cat mentioning her in 2024 in Sonic x Shadow Generations.
