Who is Rotor?
Rotor the Walrus is the mechanic and inventor of the Knothole Freedom Fighters, in the SatAM cartoon (1993) and the Archie comics. Like the rest of the team, he is absent from the video games.
His species, often misreported: he is a walrus (with tusks and whiskers), and certainly not a seal or a sea lion. Calm, level-headed, perceptive: he is the group's technical brain and its voice of reason, a hero who acts behind the scenes rather than on the front line. Like Sticks the Badger, he is one of those lesser-known characters that only well-versed fans of the saga really know.
Rotor was called “Boomer”
Here is the anecdote that sets Rotor apart from all the others: he was not always called that. Originally, in the cartoon's “bible” and pilot, the character was named “Boomer”.
The renaming happened in two stages. On the cartoon side, the name was changed to “Rotor” before it even aired. On the Archie comics side, developed in parallel and in a hurry, the very first issues still call him “Boomer” before correcting course — with even a meta nod in which the “Boomer's Shop” sign is repainted as “Rotor's Shop”. Be careful not to confuse him with “Boomer Walrus”, which refers to his evil counterpart from a parallel universe.

Rotor has no superpower: his strength is intellectual. A genius of mechanics, robotics and electronics, he designs and maintains all the Freedom Fighters' equipment: gadgets, sensors, machines, and Knothole's surveillance and security systems.
Not much of a fighter — hence his place at the rear — he makes up for it with his inventions and his ability to reverse-engineer enemy technology. Like any good walrus, he is also sturdy, a strong swimmer and resistant to the cold.
His development in the comics
The Archie comics give Rotor far more depth. There he is a founding member and the chief engineer of the resistance. One turning point marks him for good: he seriously injures his back saving Tails from a collapsing ceiling, which pushes him to withdraw from the field.
But he returns to the fight thanks to a powered nanite armor, the “Iron Rotor”, co-designed with the AI NICOLE. Later, after the continuity reboot, he builds with Tails the Sky Patrol, the Freedom Fighters' flying-ship HQ. The quiet tinkerer, always at work behind the scenes.
The hero in the shadows
Rotor embodies a rare kind of hero: the one who wins the battles without necessarily fighting them. Without him, no gadgets, no vehicles, no systems to foil Robotnik's plans.
The cartoon gave him a mixed fate: a season 2 redesign, shorter and rounder, poorly received by fans, pushed him further into the background, in the workshop rather than in the field. But in the comics, the walrus remained a respected figure from start to finish — including by Knuckles.
