What is G.U.N.?

G.U.N. stands for "Guardian Units of Nations." It is the military and global law enforcement organization in the Sonic universe — the defense forces of the United Federation (the fictional equivalent of the United States), led by a Commander under the authority of the president.

A particularity: since the invention of the "Chaos Drive," most of its troops consist of automated, unmanned combat machines. G.U.N. makes its first major appearance in Sonic Adventure 2 (2001), pursuing both Sonic — wrongly accused — and Dr. Eggman.

The ARK Raid and Maria's Death

The founding event dates back about fifty years before the game. Judging Professor Gerald Robotnik's "Project Shadow" too dangerous, G.U.N. launches a military raid on the Space Colony ARK. The tragedy is terrible: young Maria is shot by a soldier while helping Shadow escape, and almost all project personnel perish.

The Hunt for Shadow

After the raid, Shadow is frozen in stasis for about fifty years. Upon his awakening, G.U.N. considers him a threat and hunts him. The organization's Commander, in particular, harbors a personal grudge against him, holding him responsible for what happened on the ARK.

Rouge, Omega, and Team Dark

G.U.N. does not only act with robots. Rouge the Bat, the jewel thief, works for the organization as a spy. With Shadow and the robot E-123 Omega, she forms the famous Team Dark, which eventually works for G.U.N.

The relationship between Shadow and G.U.N. evolves. In the game Shadow the Hedgehog (2005), the organization faces the invasion of the Black Arms and eventually openly allies with Sonic and his friends.
