Sonic's Mentor

Their relationship begins in conflict. Caliburn despises Sonic's inexperience and manners, first calling him a "boor" and then an "idiot" for every breach of etiquette. But this strict tutor has a method: he pushes Sonic into battle to teach him honor and the code of chivalry.

Thanks to this training, Sonic confronts the Knights of the Round Table, all masters of the sword — Sir Lancelot (Shadow), Sir Gawain (Knuckles), and Sir Percival (Blaze) — in just a few days. Once Sonic proves worthy, Caliburn finally bestows upon him a lasting title: "Sir Sonic, Knight of the Wind." This is a rare instance in the saga: a mere weapon takes on the role of mentor and loyal sidekick, in constant dialogue with the hero.

Caliburn accepts Sonic as its bearer — The relationship flips along the way: the sword that kept correcting Sonic ends up recognising him as worthy.

Caliburn is Excalibur

The great revelation of the game: Caliburn is actually Excalibur, of which he is only the constrained form. The nod is historically accurate: in the true Arthurian legend, "Caliburn" and "Excalibur" indeed refer to the same sword, the former name having evolved into the latter through medieval translations.

This truth emerges in the final battle. The Dark Queen (Merlina) cuts Caliburn in half and injures Sonic; it is the hedgehog's resolve that revives the blade's light. Nimue and the Knights then transfer the power of the three other sacred swords (Arondight, Galatine, Laevatein) to Sonic, which restores Caliburn to its true form, Excalibur. Be careful not to confuse: Caliburn is the sword; Excalibur Sonic is the golden form of the hedgehog wielding it. Both coexist in the final battle.
