Who is Bark?

Bark is an anthropomorphic polar bear, who appeared in Sonic the Fighters, the arcade game developed by Sega AM2 and released in Japan in 1996. The game was distributed in North America under the title Sonic Championship: two names, one and the same game.

He is the giant of the roster: pure power, the heavy and slow character who compensates with his striking force. And he is also the big mute of the group — a trait that greatly contributes to his aura.

A character created for the arcade

Bark is not a recycled character: he is one of the two characters invented especially for Sonic the Fighters, along with Bean the Dynamite. The request came from the Sonic Team: Yuji Naka had asked AM2 to create new faces to flesh out the game's cast.

Another technical detail that explains a lot: Sonic the Fighters — the first 3D Sonic game — is built on the Fighting Vipers engine (1995), another Sega fighting game. This kinship would have unexpected consequences for the roster, as we will see with Honey the Cat.

His look and style

Bark's design is instantly recognizable. Contrary to popular belief, his fur is not white but a very pale yellow, almost cream, with a white triangle on his chest. His build is round and plump rather than tall: long, muscular arms, short legs, a fur collar around his neck.

His signature attire: an orange and red beanie with two holes for his ears. A bear in winter attire, good-natured in appearance — and formidable in close combat.

His place in the roster

In Sonic the Fighters, Bark is often associated with two other figures: Bean the Dynamite, the explosive duck created at the same time as him, and Fang the Hunter, the bounty hunter already seen in Sonic Triple Trouble. The trio of "bad boys" of the game, often grouped by fans and comics.

His reappearances

Bark never had the career of a main character, but he hasn't disappeared. He can notably be found in Fighters Megamix (Sega Saturn, 1997), the Sega fighting game crossover, where he appears alongside Bean — a nice continuation of the kinship between Sonic the Fighters and Fighting Vipers.

He then experiences a second life in comics, where authors have taken hold of the trio of brutes to make them recurring side characters. Enough to keep the flame alive for a character who, in three decades, still hasn't said a word.
