VillainSonic UnleashedWerehog
Asleep in the planet's core since the dawn of time, a primordial entity slowly accumulates the world's negative energy there. The great threat of Sonic Unleashed (2008), Dark Gaia forms an unchanging cycle with Light Gaia: one destroys, the other rebuilds and sends it back to sleep. Eggman, who covets its power to build Eggmanland, wakes it prematurely using a cannon that reverses the polarity of the Chaos Emeralds, which splits the surface into seven pieces. Contrary to a widespread belief, it does not transform Sonic: it is the released negative energy that creates the Werehog, cured later on.
Summary
A primordial creature slumbering at the Earth's core, so powerful it can shatter the planet into pieces: this is Dark Gaia, the great threat of Sonic Unleashed (2008). An entity as old as the world itself, shrouded in darkness.

What is Dark Gaia?
Dark Gaia is a primordial entity of destruction, the embodiment of darkness and night. It has slumbered in the planet's core since the dawn of time, slowly accumulating the world's negative energy.
An Eternal Cycle with Light Gaia
Dark Gaia is only one half of a whole. It has a cosmic opposite: Light Gaia. Together, they form an eternal cycle: Dark Gaia emerges to destroy the world, then Light Gaia rebuilds it and sends it back to sleep in the core.
Game surprise: Sonic's amnesiac little companion, Chip, is none other than Light Gaia himself — the benevolent guardian of the planet.

Awakened by Eggman and the Shattered Planet
As often happens, it's all Dr. Eggman's fault. Coveting Dark Gaia's power to build his "Eggmanland," he prematurely awakens her with a cannon that reverses the polarity of the Chaos Emeralds to strike the core. The result: the planet's surface fractures into seven pieces.

Beware of a common misconception: it's not Dark Gaia that directly transforms Sonic. It's his exposure to the negative energy of the Chaos Emeralds, released during Eggman's attack, that mutates the hedgehog into a Werehog. Later, Dark Gaia drains this negative energy from Sonic's body to accelerate her own growth — which, paradoxically, heals Sonic of his Werehog condition.

⚡ And for all his transformations, here are Sonic's transformations.

Perfect Dark Gaia, the Final Boss
At the climax, Eggman re-assembles Dark Gaia, who reaches her complete and perfect form: Perfect Dark Gaia, the game's final boss. It will take the combined forces of Super Sonic and the Gaia Colossus to defeat her and send her back to sleep in the core — restoring the eternal cycle.
