CharacterChaoSonic Adventure 2
A small propeller-topped automaton modeled after a Neutral Chao, Omochao is the Sonic series' tutorial in the flesh. His name blends omocha, “toy” in Japanese, and Chao; his official species remains Robot, mass-produced. First seen as a background extra in Sonic Adventure (1998 in Japan, 1999 internationally), he inherits the hint-giver role in Sonic Adventure 2, where he replaces the Hint Orbs and can even be picked up and thrown like a weapon. Referee of the Chao Races and reporter over at Sonic Riders, he drags along a reputation for being annoying that Sega parodies in LEGO Dimensions and switches off through the “Omochao Hint Display” option in Sonic Generations.
Omochao is the little robot guide of the Sonic series: a mass-produced automaton modeled after a Chao, whose mission is to whisper hints to the player. Behind his mechanical-toy looks lies a mixed reputation, somewhere between walking encyclopedia and all-category champion of the “annoying character”.

Who is Omochao, Sonic's robot guide?
Omochao (オモチャオ) is a mass-produced robot from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, modeled after a Neutral Chao and credited with “almost unlimited knowledge of the world”. His official species is therefore Robot, not Chao. His name is a portmanteau of the Japanese omocha (玩具, “toy”) and “Chao”.
His look betrays that mix: a teardrop-shaped head with big orange and yellow eyes, no nose and no fingers, topped by an orange two-blade propeller and extended at the back by a wind-up key. In other words, a small automaton with the look of a mechanical toy.
🔑 With his wind-up key stuck in his back, Omochao looks every bit like a mechanical toy someone forgot to put away; the toy box in your bedroom, though, is better filled with our Sonic toys.
He should not be confused with the living Chao, those peaceful creatures raised in the Chao Garden: Omochao is only a robot made in their image and, unlike them, he can speak normal languages. As he is mass-produced, there are in fact many Omochao, and not a single one.
Another frequent mix-up: Omochao is not Cheese. The latter is a living, one-of-a-kind Chao, Cream the Rabbit's pet — an entity completely separate from the robot guide.

His first on-screen appearance goes back to Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast, 1998 in Japan, 1999 internationally). There he only plays a background part: several Omochao point the way to the Chao in the Chao Stadium (Station Square Garden) and during the Chao Races.
It is Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) that hands him his legendary job: that of hint giver. There the Omochao replace the Hint Orbs of the first game; you only need to touch one of them to receive a piece of advice, which he then says out loud while following the character.
The nuance matters: you sometimes read that the character “dates from 2001”, but 2001 only corresponds to his role as a guide. On screen, Omochao has indeed existed since 1998-1999.
The walking tutorial: hints, commentary and refereeing
In practice, Omochao is the series' tutorial in the flesh: he doles out hints, explanations and narration to guide the heroes as much as the player. He is the friend of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Cream — the last of whom politely calls him “Mr. Omochao”.
Sonic Adventure 2 pushes the gimmick quite far. There you can pick Omochao up and throw him like a weapon to destroy enemies and obstacles, hurt him, or watch him reappear if he falls into a pit. Mistreated for too long, he sulks and stops giving his hints in that spot.
🤾 Picked up, thrown and mistreated in Sonic Adventure 2, Omochao ends up sulking and keeping his hints to himself; our Sonic cushions, on the other hand, take every pillow fight in your living room without ever holding a grudge.
His playground does not stop at the levels. In the Chao World, Omochao referees the Chao Races and the Chao Karate — starting pistol and flags included. Elsewhere, he turns into a TV reporter and commentator for the competitions of Sonic Riders, Sonic Free Riders and the Mario & Sonic series.

“The most annoying character in Sonic”?
You cannot talk about Omochao without his reputation for being annoying. His constant interruptions and his voice in Sonic Adventure 2 exasperated part of the player base. Careful though: this is a public perception, not an official trait — on paper, his personality remains friendly and helpful.
Sega ended up playing along. In LEGO Dimensions, his lines and the other characters' reactions seem to openly parody this image of an intrusive and not very useful guide that he has dragged around since SA2.
The studio even went as far as making him optional: in the console and PC version of Sonic Generations, his presence in the levels can be switched off through the “Omochao Hint Display” menu option. A deactivation documented for that game specifically, not to be generalized to the whole series.
Powers, personality and little quirks
On paper, Omochao is almost omniscient: Sonic: The Ultimate Character Guide (2016) describes him as knowing “everything about everything”. He flies thanks to the propeller on his head, shows good durability, proves a decent pilot (the Chao Pod in Team Sonic Racing) and understands the language of the Animals, something few characters can do.
As an automaton, he belongs to the series' long line of robots, at the opposite end from a martial model such as E-102 Gamma: Omochao, for his part, is a peaceful support robot, never a fighter.
As for his character, he is described as friendly, helpful, cheerful and talkative, with a patience that wears thin when he is roughed up. His best-known quirk, however, remains a verbal tic specific to the Japanese version: he almost always adds “Chao” (チャオ) at the end of his sentences.
That nod recalls his DNA: he is only a mechanical copy of the Chao, those creatures of which the series offers a thousand variants, from the peaceful residents of the garden to more unusual cases such as Belgog in Sonic Chronicles.
Omochao across the continuities
In the games, which serve as the main canon, his origin is deliberately minimal: a mass-produced robot model based on the Chao, with no elaborate founding story. There is no point looking for a grand origin story on that side.
The Archie Comics offer a radically different version: there Omochao was originally a very much alive neutral Chao, who became robotic after spending time with Jules Hedgehog, then was adopted by the Hedgehog Family. This genealogy belongs to the comic book and must not be confused with the origin in the games.
At IDW Publishing, he returns to duty as presenter and race judge in the “Chao Races and Badnik Bases” arc (Sonic the Hedgehog #33-36), before reappearing in “Phantom Riders” and then “Otherworld Comedy” (2023).
One last marker to avoid false trails: Omochao does not exist in SatAM. The 1993-1994 cartoon predates his creation (1998), and he must not be confused with NICOLE either, the computer of the Archie continuity.
💻 There is no mixing up Omochao with NICOLE, the computer of the Archie continuity; the computer on your desk won't be mistaken for any other either, once its lid is covered in our Sonic stickers.
