Two smelly, brawling skunk brothers who prepare choreographed entrances… which rhyme very badly. Rough and Tumble are the comic villains of the IDW comics: low-level brutes, more bluster than brains, who we love to see get put in their place.

Who are Rough and Tumble?
Rough and Tumble are a duo of comedic antagonists, original characters from the IDW Sonic comics created by Ian Flynn and Tyson Hesse. They debut in issue #2 (2018) and really come into their own in issue #3, in the "Fallout!" arc. They are two skunk brothers, which sets the tone: their weapon is smell.
Their name comes from the English expression "rough and tumble." The publisher summarizes them with a formula: "more brawn than brains." Arrogant, immature, and vindictive, they love to fight, eat, and terrorize those weaker than themselves—but are easily fooled by the slightest promise of a new weapon.
Who's who?
This is the most common mistake, so let's clear it up right away. Rough is the smaller one: the loudmouth, the showman, the one who rhymes (badly) and produces the smell. Blue-grey fur, red eyes, a long crest down his back—and he has kept his tail, which is prehensile and sharp enough to cut a robot.
Tumble is the taller one: the muscle, an albino skunk with cream fur, taciturn and superstitious. His peculiarity: he lost his tail (the circumstances are never explained), and he takes it very badly—to the point of resenting Tails for having two. He compensates with a mechanical prosthetic tail shaped like a club.

View product →Their smelly weapons
Like any self-respecting skunk, their signature asset is their nauseating musk, which attacks the eyes and respiratory tract. Rough turns these into "Stink Bombers," smelly spinning attacks. But their secret weapon is a duo combo: the "Grand Stink Bomber Slam," where Tumble literally throws his brother at the enemy while Rough releases his stench—enough to make a large robot explode.
Eggman even rigged up custom weapons for them: a backpack launcher for concentrated musk capsules for Rough, and the famous mechanical club-tail for Tumble. Gadgets that invariably end up destroyed or turned against them.
Changing bosses
One point to keep in mind: Rough and Tumble constantly change bosses. They start out as independent mercenaries, petty tyrants extorting a town. Then Dr. Starline breaks them out; they go to work for Eggman; they return with Starline in "Bad Guys" (alongside Zavok and Mimic); they end up employed by Clutch the opossum and his Clean Sweep company. Never pin them down to a single employer.
The first Zombots
Despite their status as second-rate villains, Rough and Tumble played an unintentionally historic role in the Metal Virus saga. Used as guinea pigs by Eggman, they are the very first named Zombots in history. And it's upon contact with the Zombot Tumble that Sonic discovers he himself is infected—a pivotal moment in IDW's biggest arc, triggered by its most humble scoundrels.
