Sara, the President’s Daughter in the Sonic OVA

A spoiled catgirl who claws at Dr. Robotnik and kisses Knuckles to motivate him: Sara is the comic relief of the 1996 Sonic OVA. The President’s daughter and the film’s hostage, she only has eyes for “her” Sonic. A portrait of a character exclusive to this cult film.

Who is Sara?

Sara is the daughter of the President of the “Land of the Sky”, the surface world of Planet Freedom, in the 1996 Sonic OVA. A detail that often comes as a surprise: she is not an ordinary human, but a human/cat hybrid — a catgirl, with cat ears, a brown tail and a clawing reflex.

🐾 Cat ears, a brown tail and a clawing reflex: Sara is no ordinary human. On the lid of your laptop, those claw-like scratches vanish under our Sonic stickers.

In terms of personality, she is a spoiled but good-hearted young woman who serves as comic relief throughout the film. Her name, romanised as “Sara”, even shows up on screen as “Seira” during a video game scene — the same one where her captor’s name appears as “Eggman”.

Hostage of a forced marriage

Sara is at the heart of the film’s trap. She and her father are captured by Dr. Robotnik in order to lure Sonic in — it is by coming to free them that the hedgehog will fall into the machine that scans his data to create Hyper Metal Sonic.

But Robotnik has an even more disturbing plan: once the Land of the Sky is destroyed, he intends to marry Sara so the two of them can “repopulate” the world. A plan that disgusts her: despite the beautiful wedding dress he offers her, she refuses, screams and claws at him. This damsel in distress has character.

Her crush on Sonic

What drives Sara is her crush on Sonic, whom she readily calls “my Sonic”. Far from staying passive, she throws herself into helping him throughout the adventure and makes life difficult for her captors.

One point to correct, since a fan legend is going around: there is no romance between Sara and Hyper Metal Sonic. The robot may well carry Sonic’s emotions, but the film never builds a love story between them. The only heart beating in Sara is for the real Sonic.

📌 Sara calls Sonic “my Sonic” out loud, without hiding it; your own favorite can be declared without a word, pinned to your jacket lapel with our Sonic pins.

The kiss for Knuckles

Sara’s most memorable scene comes down to a kiss on the cheek — for Knuckles. But be careful: it is not a declaration of love. It is calculation: Sara kisses the echidna to motivate him into action, leaving him red and frozen with embarrassment.

The gag sums the character up well: a cunning young woman who plays on her charm to get what she wants, while saving her real feelings for Sonic. Comic relief that goes against the grain of the classic princess to be rescued.

💋 Sara only kisses Knuckles on the cheek to push him into action; your cheek can rest on our Sonic cushions with no ulterior motive, just for a nap on the couch.

A 100% OVA character

Sara is exclusive to the Sonic OVA: she appears in no Sonic video game. Her only excursion outside the film is a cameo in an Archie Comics issue, inside a reality that would later be erased.

Her catgirl design, by Tsuneo Ninomiya from an idea by Sonic’s creators Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima, makes her a rare character in the series: a human-animal hybrid, with no equivalent among the usual heroes. A curiosity that only OVA fans really know. The film lines up other singular figures, such as Old Man Owl, the old owl of the OVA.
