Sonic's very first level

Green Hill Zone is the first level of Sonic the Hedgehog, released in 1991 on Mega Drive (Genesis in the USA). It was designed by level designer Hirokazu Yasuhara, with music by Masato Nakamura.

Its mission was simple yet crucial: to showcase in a few seconds the speed and fluidity that would make Sonic famous, while platformers of the time mostly focused on caution.

A setting that became a signature

Green Hill's scenery is lush and sunny: grassy hills, palm trees, cliffs, waterfalls, and the famous checkered floor. The whole thing is said to be inspired by Californian landscapes.

Its vertical loops (the famous loops) have become an emblematic image of video games as a whole, to the point of being copied and parodied everywhere.

Three acts and a boss

Like the other levels in the game, Green Hill is divided into three acts. At the end of the third, Sonic faces Dr Eggman for the first time, before moving on to the next level, Marble Zone.

It's also a dream playground for speed record enthusiasts, who zip through it at incredible speeds.

A nod even in the movies

The level left such a strong impression that its name appears everywhere. In the Sonic movies, the small town where Sheriff Tom lives is called Green Hills — a clear homage to the foundational level.
