LevelSonic 3Knuckles
The first zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released in February 1994, Angel Island Zone takes place on the floating island held aloft by the Master Emerald. Its opening cutscene has become a classic: Sonic arrives as Super Sonic, carrying the seven Chaos Emeralds inherited from Sonic 2, before Knuckles bursts out of the ground to strip him of them. The echidna makes his very first appearance in the franchise here, manipulated by Eggman. Midway through Act 1, the Fire Breath drones set the jungle ablaze and the music switches to its burning version. Two bosses close the zone, before the aquatic handover to Hydrocity.

The First Zone of Sonic 3
Angel Island Zone is the very first zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (February 1994), on Angel Island, the floating island kept afloat by the Master Emerald. It is the direct sequel to Sonic 2: the Death Egg crashed there at the end of the previous game, and Eggman is trying to restart it.

Knuckles' Ambush
The opening cutscene is iconic. Sonic arrives as Super Sonic (he possesses the 7 Chaos Emeralds inherited from Sonic 2)... only to be immediately robbed by Knuckles, who springs from the ground and makes him lose his Super form and the 7 Emeralds. This is the very first appearance of Knuckles the Echidna in the franchise — not yet playable (he would become playable in Sonic & Knuckles), and manipulated by Eggman who made him believe that Sonic was coming to steal the Master Emerald.

The great signature of the level: the scenery transforms live. In the middle of Act 1, a squadron of Eggman's Fire Breath drones flies over and sets the jungle on fire. The end of Act 1 and all of Act 2 then take place in an orange blaze — the music itself switches to an "on fire" version. An early and spectacular example of environmental storytelling.

Two Fire Bosses
The zone features two distinct confrontations. In Act 1, the Fire Breath (the flamethrower drone that sets the jungle on fire) — the first boss of the entire game, to be destroyed in 6 hits. In Act 2, the Egg Scorcher Mk. III, an Egg Mobile equipped with fire-ball cannons piloted by Eggman himself.
Its Reappearances
Angel Island remains the first level in Sonic & Knuckles (where Knuckles' path differs, without an ambush). It also opens Sonic Mania (2017) via a playable cutscene, before the Phantom Ruby projects Sonic towards Green Hill. Note: unlike other tracks from Sonic 3, its music was not replaced in Sonic Origins (2022).
