LevelSonic the Hedgehog 2Tails
The first zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), Emerald Hill rolls out its lime-green hills and checkered ground on West Side Island. This is where Miles Tails Prower steps in alongside the hedgehog, playable by a second player: the most famous duo in the saga is born here. The zone also introduces the corkscrew loop, absent from Sonic 1, before closing on the Egg Drillster, Eggman's drill buggy, which falls in eight hits. The leaked prototypes still labeled it Green Hill Zone. Music by Masato Nakamura, of the band Dreams Come True.

Green checkerboard hills, a blue sky, and a small two-tailed fox joining the adventure: Emerald Hill Zone opens Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and will remain the level where a whole duo was born. A visit to the tropical paradise of West Side Island.
🌱 Green Hill Zone, its ancestor.
Sonic 2's First Zone
Emerald Hill Zone is the very first zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), on West Side Island. Its lime-green hills with checkerboard ground make it the spiritual successor to Green Hill — not to be confused: Green Hill opened Sonic 1, Emerald Hill opens Sonic 2.
⚡ Chemical Plant Zone, the next one.

Tails' Debut
It is here that Miles "Tails" Prower makes his big debut, alongside Sonic. The young two-tailed fox follows the hedgehog from Emerald Hill and can be controlled by a second player: the saga's most famous duo was born in this level.

Emerald Hill introduces a novelty that would become a signature: the corkscrew loop, these twisted half-pipes that Sonic traverses at full speed in faux 3D. Absent from Sonic 1, this gadget alone symbolizes the gain in speed and spectacle of the second installment.

The Drilling Boss
At the end of Act 2 stands the first boss of the game: the Egg Drillster (historically "Drill Eggman"), Eggman's Egg Mobile mounted on a buggy with a large driller at the front. With the driller protecting its front face, you have to hit it at the right moment — eight hits are enough to defeat it.
Its Reappearances
Emerald Hill appears in all re-releases of Sonic 2, from Sonic Jam to Sonic Origins. A development curiosity: in the leaked prototypes of Sonic 2, the zone was still labeled "Green Hill Zone" — proof of its direct lineage. Its music is by Masato Nakamura, from the band Dreams Come True.
