LevelSonic & KnucklesMecha Sonic
Greco-Roman temples float above Angel Island: Sky Sanctuary Zone, the last intact remnant of the ancient echidna civilization in Sonic & Knuckles (1994). The penultimate zone for Sonic and Tails, it is outright the final one for Knuckles, who faces Mecha Sonic Mk. II there, turned into a golden Super Mecha Sonic after seizing the Master Emerald. On Sonic's side, the duel plays out in three phases packed with retro nods, going as far as recreating the Egg Wrecker from Green Hill. The repaired Death Egg takes off again here and launches the final chase. Sonic Generations chose it to embody the classic era.
Summary
Ancient temples floating above the clouds, a golden robot, and the return of a spatial threat: Sky Sanctuary Zone is one of the most memorable levels in Sonic & Knuckles. An ascent above Angel Island.

Sonic & Knuckles' Sky Sanctuary
Sky Sanctuary Zone appears in Sonic & Knuckles (1994) — and becomes a zone in the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles via the "lock-on" system. These are Greco-Roman ruins floating in the sky, above Angel Island: the last intact remnant of an ancient echidna civilization. For Sonic and Tails, it's the second-to-last zone, just before the Death Egg Zone.

The boss: Mecha Sonic
The guardian of the zone is Mecha Sonic Mk. II, a robotic copy of Sonic — not to be confused with Metal Sonic (Sonic CD) or Silver Sonic (Sonic 2). On Sonic's side, you face him in three phases, a true festival of retro nods (including a recreation of the Egg Wrecker, the very first boss of the saga, in Green Hill Zone). For Knuckles, Sky Sanctuary is actually the final zone: Mecha Sonic seizes the Master Emerald there to become a formidable golden Super Mecha Sonic.

The Death Egg Relaunches
Sky Sanctuary also carries significant plot weight. After the crash of the Death Egg at the end of Sonic 3, Eggman repaired it: upon their arrival at the sanctuary, Sonic and his friends see it relaunch, leading them to pursue it for the final confrontation.

A Beloved Music Track
Sky Sanctuary's theme is one of the most famous and remixed tracks from the classic Sonic era. The Sonic & Knuckles soundtrack is credited to Howard Drossin and the Sega Sound Team, with no official track-by-track attribution.
Its Reappearances
A crowning achievement in 2011: in Sonic Generations, Sky Sanctuary is THE level chosen to represent the classic era and Sonic & Knuckles, playable as Classic Sonic. A choice that definitively cemented the zone in the pantheon of Sonic levels.
