The last zone of Sonic & Knuckles (1994), The Doomsday Zone only opens to players who have collected all the Emeralds. Without them, the adventure stops at the Death Egg Zone and its normal ending. Everything here is played as Super or Hyper Sonic, in an auto-scrolling flight sequence unique among the 16-bit episodes: Earth orbit, an asteroid field and the pursuit of the Death Egg. The real threat is the timer, fifty rings melting away one unit per second, the music speeding up under the last ten. Then come the Final Weapon, and the Giant Eggman Robo brandishing the stolen Master Emerald.

The True Ending of Sonic & Knuckles
The Doomsday Zone is the very last zone of Sonic & Knuckles (1994), its "true" ending. It takes place in space, orbiting above Earth, amidst an asteroid field. Not to be confused with the Death Egg Zone (7th zone), which leads to the "normal" ending.
Reserved for Super Sonic
This zone can only be accessed as Super Sonic (or Hyper Sonic), meaning after collecting all the Emeralds. Without them, the game ends at the Death Egg Zone. It is also an auto-scrolling flight sequence, unique in 16-bit Sonic games: you don't walk, you control the hedgehog as he dashes through debris.

The Final Boss: The Final Weapon
The final boss is the "Final Weapon" piloted by Eggman, in two phases. First, a large machine that spits out homing missiles: you have to redirect them back at him rather than crashing into him. Then a giant red mech, the "Giant Eggman Robo", wielding the stolen Master Emerald — the objective being to retrieve it from him.

The Race Against the Rings
The real danger here is time. Sonic enters the zone with 50 rings and loses one per second (the Super form feeds on rings). At zero, it's instant death. When only ten remain, the music speeds up to warn of the danger.
Its Reappearances
The Doomsday Zone is never replayed elsewhere as it is: it is only found in re-releases of Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic Origins. Its theme, composed by Howard Drossin, however, has remained iconic.
