LevelSonic & KnucklesMaster Emerald
Sanctuary of the Master Emerald, Hidden Palace Zone is the 5th zone of Sonic & Knuckles (1994), following on from the Lava Reef caves. A single act, almost entirely narrative: the shortest zone in the game is also its pivot. Eggman appears there after the duel, tears out the Master Emerald and electrocutes Knuckles; the echidna finally understands the manipulation and opens the road to Sky Sanctuary for Sonic. It is also here that the seven Chaos Emeralds become Super Emeralds. Not to be confused with the Hidden Palace cut from Sonic 2, restored in 2013.
Summary
No traps, no race: this is where the big twist of Sonic & Knuckles (1994) takes place. Hidden Palace Zone is the sanctuary of the Master Emerald, where an enemy becomes an ally. Decoding the game's narrative core.
The 5th Zone of Sonic & Knuckles
Hidden Palace Zone is the 5th zone of Sonic & Knuckles (1994) — the 11th in Sonic 3 & Knuckles — an ancient temple housing the Master Emerald altar, extending from the Lava Reef caves. It is the shortest zone in the game: a single act, almost entirely narrative.
☁️ Sky Sanctuary Zone, the sequel.

The turning point of the whole story
From the beginning, Knuckles believes Eggman's lie: that Sonic had come to steal the Emeralds. Everything changes here. After the duel, Eggman himself appears, rips the Master Emerald from its altar and electrocutes Knuckles. The echidna then realizes he has been manipulated: he sides with Sonic and opens the way to Sky Sanctuary for him.

The duel against Knuckles
The only "boss" of the zone is not an Eggman machine: it's a duel between Sonic (or Tails) and Knuckles, and only in Sonic's scenario. It's also here that, with the 7 Chaos Emeralds, the Master Emerald transforms them into Super Emeralds — the key to the true ending.

Not to be confused
Beware: this Hidden Palace is the one from Sonic & Knuckles, a truly finished zone. It is different from the cut Hidden Palace Zone from Sonic 2, which long remained a myth before being restored in the 2013 remaster.
Its reappearances
The concept is reinterpreted in Sonic Mania (2017), where Hidden Palace becomes a sub-zone attached to Lava Reef. Its music, meanwhile, is borrowed from Lava Reef Act 2, with the two zones flowing naturally into each other.
