Flying Battery Zone: Eggman's flying battleship

LevelSonic & KnucklesSonic Mania

Eggman's flying battleship provides the setting for Flying Battery Zone, the second stage of Sonic & Knuckles (1994), explored mostly from the inside. Its signature: electromagnets on the ceiling that pull up blocks and iron balls chained to the floor, platforms as much as crushing traps. Three confrontations punctuate the crossing — the Gapsule disguised as an end-of-level capsule, the Laser Prison mini-boss, then the Egg Hanger hanging from the magnetized ceiling. Planned for Sonic 3 but cut for lack of space, the zone was meant to lead to Ice Cap through a snowboard door. Sonic Mania redesigned it in 2017 with new bosses.

A flying battleship bristling with traps, ceiling magnets, and a development history full of phantoms: Flying Battery Zone is one of the most unique levels in Sonic & Knuckles. All aboard Eggman's airship.

Eggman's Flying Battleship

Flying Battery Zone is a zone from Sonic & Knuckles (1994): a massive flying battleship/airship belonging to Eggman. You primarily navigate inside its armored hull, with some open-sky sections on the ship's exterior. In the standalone game, it's the 2nd zone; in the Sonic 3 & Knuckles compilation, it appears later in the adventure.

Sonic makes his way out in the open along the hull: the level takes place entirely aboard a vessel in flight.

The Electromagnet Gimmick

The zone's signature feature is the electromagnets on the ceiling: at regular intervals, they activate and pull up blocks and iron balls held to the ground by chains. Serving as both platforms and crushing traps, they demand precise timing. In addition, there are pulsating spikes and, in Act 2, rotating screw platforms.

Three Tricky Battles

The zone features three challenging confrontations. In Act 1, the Gapsule disguises itself as an end-of-level capsule: you don't hit it directly, but force it to crash into its own mass (6 hits). In Act 2, a mini-boss, the Laser Prison (a nod to the Wing Fortress boss in Sonic 2), which you dodge until the room gives way; then the boss, the Egg Hanger, attached to the magnetized ceiling, which you hit in the cockpit (8 hits).

Sonic 3's Phantom Level

Flying Battery hides a development secret. The zone was originally planned for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but was cut from the cartridge (due to lack of space, as the game was split into two) and then reallocated to Sonic & Knuckles. According to Yuji Naka, Sonic was originally supposed to tear off a door there to make a snowboard to reach Ice Cap — the transition disappeared, but the snowboard remained at the beginning of Ice Cap, now unexplained.

❄️ This famous snowboard actually opens the next planned level: (re)read Ice Cap Zone.

Its Return in Sonic Mania

A triumph in 2017: Flying Battery is one of only two Sonic & Knuckles levels to return in Sonic Mania (along with Lava Reef), completely redesigned. Its bosses, however, are new: the "Big Squeeze" (a compactor) and Eggman's "Spider Mobile."

Sonic Mania reopens the warship and extends its interior, without touching the original principle.
