Sandopolis Zone: Sonic's haunted desert

LevelSonic & KnucklesAngel Island

The third zone of Sonic & Knuckles (1994), Sandopolis pairs a booby-trapped ancient desert with a pyramid where the light goes out on its own. Act 1 strings together sand slides, quicksand and moving columns above Angel Island, between Flying Battery and Lava Reef. Act 2 tips into horror: the more the darkness spreads, the more the Hyudoro ghosts multiply and shove the player around, until switches light the room back up. Two guardians punctuate the run, the Guardian that has to be lured into the quicksand, then the Egg Golem and its eight hits to the head. The level has never become playable anywhere else.

Burning dunes, a pyramid shrouded in darkness, and multiplying ghosts: Sandopolis Zone is the rare horror moment of Sonic & Knuckles (1994). A level players don't forget.

Sonic & Knuckles' 3rd Zone

Sandopolis Zone is the 3rd zone of Sonic & Knuckles (1994) — the 9th in the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles — on Angel Island. It takes place in an ancient desert dotted with pyramids, across two very different acts.

Pyramids and sand at sunset: Act 1 plays out in the open air.

Shifting Sands

Act 1 takes place in the open desert exterior: sand slides you glide down at full speed, quick-sand that sucks Sonic down, and sand columns that rise and fall. An unstable and treacherous terrain.

Pyramid Ghosts

Act 2 shifts to the inside of a pyramid, and this is where the level becomes iconic. The room darkens on its own over time, and the darker it gets, the more ghosts (Hyudoros) appear, multiply, and push you around. The solution: activate switches to turn the lights back on and disperse them. A truly terrifying segment.

Act 2 pushes deep into the pyramid: in the dark, the ghosts multiply until they become unbearable.

Two Formidable Guardians

Two confrontations punctuate the zone. At the end of Act 1, a mini-boss, the Guardian: a stone golem that cannot be hit directly — you must lure it into the quicksand to drown it. At the end of Act 2, the Egg Golem, a spike-covered colossus whose only weak point is its head (eight hits), piloted by Eggman or EggRobo depending on the character.

Its Reappearances

Rarely does Sandopolis never return as a playable level in a later game. Only its light switch gimmick has been reused elsewhere, notably in Oil Ocean from Sonic Mania.
