LevelSonic & KnucklesAngel Island

A forest of giant mushrooms that swings from spring green to winter opens Sonic & Knuckles (1994) on Angel Island. The change of season is no mere backdrop: Eggman's weather machine speeds up the cycle, and destroying its antenna at the end of Act 2 brings spring back. Rotating bars and mushroom springs are used to climb. Mushroom Hill is the only level in Sonic 3 & Knuckles with a boss as early as Act 1, the lumberjack Hey Ho, before the Egg Scrambler. The opponent changes with the hero: Eggman for Sonic and Tails, an EggRobo for Knuckles.

A forest of giant mushrooms that shifts from summer to winter before your eyes, and a boss from the very first act: Mushroom Hill Zone opens Sonic & Knuckles (1994) with a flourish. A bucolic stroll on Angel Island.

The first zone of Sonic & Knuckles

Mushroom Hill Zone is the very first zone of Sonic & Knuckles (1994), on Angel Island — an immense forest of giant mushrooms. In the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles, it becomes the 7th zone, opening the second half of the adventure right after Launch Base.

Giant mushrooms and greenery: the opening zone displays a deceptive springtime palette.

A forest that changes with the seasons

The featured gimmick is not just a scenic effect: it is the very plot of the level. Eggman's weather machine artificially accelerates the seasons — the forest changes from spring green to autumn then winter. By destroying its antenna at the end of Act 2, spring is suddenly restored. You also climb with rotating bars (to spin) and mushroom-springs.

Act 2 shifts into autumn: same scenery, an entirely repainted palette, a rare effect in the series.

Two bosses, as early as Act 1

A unique feature: Mushroom Hill is the only level in all of Sonic 3 & Knuckles to feature a boss as early as Act 1. This mini-boss, the "Hey Ho", is a lumberjack badnik with an axe that projects logs. Act 2 then pits the hero against the Egg Scrambler, the famous season machine.

Eggman or EggRobo?

A delicious detail specific to Sonic & Knuckles: depending on the character played, the antagonist changes. For Sonic and Tails, it is indeed Dr. Eggman who pilots the machine; for Knuckles, it is an EggRobo, a robotic doppelgänger of Robotnik left on the island, who becomes his designated enemy. In all cases, the vanquished escapes and boards the Flying Battery which passes over the forest.

Its reappearances

Mushroom Hill appears in the Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic Origins compilations. It was even remade as a full-fledged level in Sonic Generations (3DS version), where it represents the classic era — with an autumnal Act 2.
