Teleporting in the blink of an eye, stopping time, moving an entire space station: this is what Chaos Control allows, one of the most powerful and iconic techniques in the Sonic universe. A closer look at this power that bends space and time.
💎 It all relies on the legendary stones: start with our article on the Chaos Emeralds.
What is Chaos Control?
Chaos Control is a technique that allows its wielder to distort the fabric of space-time by drawing on the energy of the Chaos Emeralds. It first appeared on screen in Sonic Adventure 2 (2001).
Teleportation and Time Manipulation
Chaos Control has two main functions:
- Space manipulation — its primary function: instant teleportation from one point to another, of oneself as well as other people or objects.
- Time manipulation — its secondary function: slowing down, freezing, or stopping time for a short period.
(Not to be confused with Chaos Blast, which is an explosive attack, not a utility technique.)
A Power Fueled by the Emeralds
Chaos Control cannot be used empty-handed: it requires at least one Chaos Emerald (real, or a copy of the same "wavelength"). And the more Emeralds gathered, the more powerful the ability becomes — reaching its full potential with all seven Emeralds.

If there's one character associated with Chaos Control, it's Shadow the Hedgehog: he is the first to use it on screen and by far the most iconic. But he's not the only one: Sonic can also use it (in SA2, with a fake Emerald), as can Silver and other characters.
