An abandoned space colony, the birthplace of Shadow, a weapon capable of destroying a planet: the Space Colony ARK is one of the most historically significant locations in the Sonic saga. It is central to Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) — and even inspires the Sonic 3 movie. A guided tour.
🖤 The character inextricably linked to it has their own profile: (re)discover Shadow the Hedgehog.
What is Space Colony ARK?
The Space Colony ARK is an immense orbiting space colony, designed and built by Professor Gerald Robotnik, Dr. Eggman's grandfather. It was launched over fifty years ago (the games deliberately remain vague about the exact date).
Both a living space and a massive research laboratory, the ARK was long a scientific flagship… before being abandoned after a tragedy.
Maria, Shadow, and Project Shadow
The ARK was home to Maria Robotnik, Gerald's granddaughter, who suffered from an incurable disease. It was partly to save her that Gerald conducted a top-secret program there, "Project Shadow," aiming to create the "Ultimate Life Form."
From this project, Shadow the Hedgehog was born, becoming Maria's great friend aboard the station.

The ARK also houses a formidable weapon: the Eclipse Cannon, capable of firing a devastating beam when powered by the seven Chaos Emeralds.
The station is guarded by the Biolizard, a first prototype of the Ultimate Life Form, created before Shadow and kept in stasis for decades.

The Tragedy That Changes Everything
The ARK's history takes a dark turn the day G.U.N. military forces storm the station. During the raid, Maria is killed. Driven by grief, Gerald secretly programs the ARK's descent towards Earth, as an act of vengeance.
It is this tragedy that transforms Shadow and gives full meaning to the events of Sonic Adventure 2.

In the finale of Sonic Adventure 2 (released in 2001 on Dreamcast), Gerald's trap is sprung: the ARK plunges towards the planet. The Biolizard uses Chaos Control to merge with the Eclipse Cannon and become the Finalhazard.
It will take the alliance of Super Sonic and Super Shadow to defeat it and return the ARK to orbit — a resolution that remains iconic among fans.
