Aquatic Ruin Zone: Sonic 2's underwater ruins

816 words | Reading time: 5 minutes

LevelSonic 2West Side Island

The third zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), Aquatic Ruin Zone raises the half-flooded remains of an ancient civilization on West Side Island. The level splits into two routes: fast, safe green hills on the surface, and slow, perilous ruins under water, where drowning awaits anyone who neglects the air bubbles. Its signature lies in the stone faces set into the pillars, whose eyes flash red before firing. Those same arrows are used to beat Eggman in eight hits, by jumping on them to reach the Egg Mobile. Prototype name: Neo Green Hill Zone.

Half-submerged stone temples, a lush jungle on the surface, and lurking arrow traps: Aquatic Ruin Zone is one of the most elegant levels in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Exploring the ruins of West Side Island.

Sonic 2's 3rd Zone

Aquatic Ruin Zone is the 3rd zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), on West Side Island — right after Chemical Plant. These are the stone remnants of an ancient civilization, half-flooded and overgrown with vegetation. Fun fact: in prototypes, the zone was called "Neo Green Hill Zone."

Ancient columns and greenery: the zone hides its flooded passages beneath an inviting surface.

Two Paths: Greenery or Ruins

The level is divided in two by water. On the surface, green hills reminiscent of Green Hill offer a fast and safe route; in the depths, the flooded ruins present a slower and more perilous path. The choice of your route is yours.

Arrows and Aquatic Sections

Two dangers characterize the zone. First, the arrows: stone faces embedded in pillars, whose eyes flash red, fire a horizontal arrow as soon as you pass them. Second, the underwater sections, where speed drops and drowning lurks if you forget to breathe air bubbles.

Arrows shoot out of the columns: the scenery itself acts as a trap, on dry land as well as underwater.

A Clever Boss

At the end of Act 2, Eggman floats above the arena and hammers two stone totems which then fire arrows. The trick? These arrows are both the danger and the solution: you must jump on them in mid-flight to gain height and hit the Egg Mobile. Eight hits are enough.

Its Reappearances

Aquatic Ruin appears in all re-releases of Sonic 2, up to the 2013 remaster (which makes Knuckles playable and restores a Hidden Palace Zone) and Sonic Origins (2022). However, it was not remade in Sonic Mania or Generations, where Sonic 2 is represented by Chemical Plant.
