Summary

What if, instead of playing a single character, you controlled three at once? That was the gamble of Sonic Heroes (2003), a cult classic that put teams in the spotlight — and which hides one of the best twists in the series. We'll explain.

What is Sonic Heroes?

Sonic Heroes is a platformer developed by the Sonic Team (its American division) and published by Sega, released in late 2003 in Japan and early 2004 elsewhere. It's the first multiplatform Sonic game: it was released on GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and then on PC, thanks to the RenderWare engine chosen to facilitate porting.

The Four Teams

The core of the game is its four teams of three characters, each living its own story:

  • Team Sonic: Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles
  • Team Dark: Shadow, Rouge, and E-123 Omega
  • Team Rose: Amy, Cream, and Big the Cat
  • Team Chaotix: Espio, Vector, and Charmy

🐊 The return of Team Chaotix is led by their leader: (re)discover Vector the Crocodile.

🐱 And the most laid-back member of Team Rose has their own profile: here's Big the Cat.

Three-Formation Gameplay

Within each team, you switch in real-time between three complementary formations:

  • Speed — for racing and chaining platforming sections
  • Fly — for crossing gaps and reaching high places
  • Power — for combat and breaking obstacles

Certain sections and bosses require juggling between the three, giving the adventure a unique rhythm.

The Twist: Metal Sonic

The entire adventure seems to pit the heroes against Dr. Eggman... but it's a decoy. The real mastermind behind the plot is Metal Sonic! Having rebelled against his creator, he imprisoned Eggman and usurped his identity (in the form of "Neo Metal Sonic") to secretly copy the heroes' data.

Inflated with this power, he transforms into Metal Madness and then into the final boss, the colossal Metal Overlord — a mechanical dragon that only the super forms of Team Sonic (Super Sonic, Super Tails, Super Knuckles) manage to defeat.

The Return of Shadow and the Debut of Omega

Sonic Heroes is also a pivotal game for two characters. It's here that Shadow makes his return after Sonic Adventure 2, awakened by Rouge — but afflicted with amnesia. And it's the very first appearance of E-123 Omega, the powerful robot that completes Team Dark.
