LevelSonic CDMega-CD

A vast quartz mine dug into Little Planet, Quartz Quadrant is Round 4 of Sonic CD, between Tidal Tempest and Wacky Workbench. Its gimmick lies in the reversible conveyor belts, which propel the hedgehog in the direction they are running and slow him down against it. The Zone 3 boss, the “Egg Conveyer”, throws players off with its invulnerability: after the jump that tips it onto the belt, all that is left is to survive by running against the flow, knowing that the faster Sonic goes, the slower the belt turns. The Good Future turns the mine into a thriving crystal city.

A glittering crystal mine, counter-directional conveyor belts, and an unbeatable boss: Quartz Quadrant is one of the most original levels in Sonic CD (1993). A descent into the heart of Little Planet.

The Conveyor Belts

The main gimmick is the reversible conveyor belts. They propel Sonic in their direction of movement: you accelerate by running in the right direction, and you are slowed down when running against them. You constantly have to contend with these mechanical currents to progress.

An Invulnerable Boss

The boss of Zone 3, the "Egg Conveyer", actually plays on the conveyor belts. A peculiarity: Eggman's machine is invulnerable. After the jump that sends it onto the conveyor belt, you must above all survive and run against the direction of the belt — a counter-intuitive detail, the faster Sonic runs, the slower the belt moves.

From Crystal to Good Future

As throughout Sonic CD, the scenery changes with the era. The Good Future of Quartz Quadrant is a magnificent, prosperous crystal city — a reward for destroying the robot generator in the past.

Its Reappearances

Quartz Quadrant is unique to Sonic CD: it has never returned as a playable level elsewhere but remains playable in all re-releases of the game, up to Sonic Origins.
