No air countdown, no drowning, but a viscous substance in which Sonic sinks as if in quicksand and where the Spin Dash becomes impossible; green fans propel him from one side to the other. The seahorse badnik Aquis and the octopus Octus populate the refinery, over music by Masato Nakamura. At the end of the zone, the Eggmarine surges out of the oil, harpoon and laser cannon out, to be beaten in eight hits. It returns as the ninth zone in Sonic Mania.

Sonic 2's 7th Zone
Oil Ocean Zone is the 7th zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), after Mystic Cave. It's a huge oil refinery belonging to Eggman, built by a polluted ocean – a symbol of unchecked industry.

The Eggmarine
The end-of-zone boss is famous: the Eggmarine, a mini war submarine that Eggman conceals under the oil, only allowing its weapons to emerge – a barbed harpoon and a laser cannon. Eight hits are required. A known trick: letting yourself sink into the oil to dodge its shots.
Its Return in Sonic Mania
A triumph in 2017: Oil Ocean makes its return in Sonic Mania, where it is the 9th zone – one of the few classic zones reimagined, alongside Chemical Plant (the two remaining distinct levels).
