Metallic Madness: The Final Level of Sonic CD

LevelSonic CDSonic Mania

The final Round of Sonic CD (1993), Metallic Madness raises Eggman's fortress on Little Planet, presented as the concentration of all his intelligence. Presses, pistons and conveyor belts make up this factory maze, but the star gimmick remains the shrinking ray: a red beam cuts Sonic down to two thirds of his size, a blue one to a quarter, turning the place into a dizzying setting. At the end of Zone 3 waits the Egg Spinner, a hovercraft ringed with four rotating blades, beaten in four hits, and not Metal Sonic, already defeated at Stardust Speedway. The zone comes back as a playable stage in Sonic Mania.

A sprawling factory, a ray that shrinks you to the size of an ant, and the ultimate face-off with Dr. Eggman: Metallic Madness closes Sonic CD in a grand finale. The final stretch on the Little Planet.

The final level of Sonic CD

Metallic Madness is the 7th and final Round of Sonic CD (1993), on the Little Planet. It is Eggman's mechanized fortress, described as "the concentration of all his intelligence": a factory maze riddled with presses, pistons, and conveyor belts.

The shrinking ray

The featured gimmick isn't just a simple trap room: it's a shrinking ray that reduces Sonic's size. A red ray brings him down to two-thirds of his size, a blue ray (at the end of Zone 2) to a quarter: tiny, Sonic then sees Eggman's factory as a giant and dizzying setting.

The final boss: Eggman

At the end of Zone 3 awaits the final boss of the game: the Egg Spinner, which is Eggman in person — not Metal Sonic, who was already defeated in the Stardust Speedway race. Aboard a spherical hovercraft surrounded by four rotating blades, you must destroy each blade: four hits are enough to finish him off.

Time travel

Like all of Sonic CD, Zones 1 and 2 utilize time travel: by dashing past a "Past" or "Future" sign, Sonic is transported to an alternate version of the level. Destroying Eggman's machines in the past ensures a "Good Future" for the Little Planet.

Metallic Madness in its past version
In the past the factory is still only a building site: that is where the future version of the zone is decided.

Its reappearances

Metallic Madness was reimagined as a complete playable level in Sonic Mania (2017), where it appears as the penultimate zone. A delightful detail: its popular Japanese theme was reused as Metal Sonic's music in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing.

Metallic Madness Zone revisited in Sonic Mania
Sonic Mania brought the zone back in 2017, circular saws and spikes included: the most visible reinterpretation of this finale.
