LevelSonic CDMetal Sonic

It is in Round 2 of Sonic CD (1993) that Metal Sonic kidnaps Amy Rose, in the zone's opening moments. Collision Chaos spreads a neon-soaked mechanized jungle across Little Planet, turned into a giant pinball table floating above the water: round star bumpers, elongated bumpers and springs send the hedgehog flying in every direction, time travel included. Amy stays captive until the end of Stardust Speedway. In Zone 3 it is not Metal Sonic who waits but Eggman, perched on a pinball table nicknamed the Egg Tilter, reachable only by catapult.

Neon lights, bumpers on every floor, and an abduction that marked the saga's history: Collision Chaos is the big pinball level in Sonic CD (1993). This is where one of Sonic's most famous captives is born.

Sonic CD's 2nd Zone

Collision Chaos is Sonic CD's (1993) Round 2, on the Little Planet, right after Palmtree Panic. It's a mechanized jungle bathed in neon lights, transformed into a gigantic pinball machine floating above the water.

Collision Chaos in its past version
Collision Chaos follows Palmtree Panic: here in the past, the neon forest before the machinery takes it over.

The Big Pinball Level

Here, everything bounces. Large round star-shaped bumpers send Sonic flying in all directions and earn points, while springs and elongated bumpers complete the scenery. Like all of Sonic CD, the level also makes use of time travel in its first two zones.

Bumpers and a pinball flipper in Collision Chaos
Bumpers, flipper and ramps: the zone borrows its vocabulary from pinball, and Sonic's trajectory is largely out of the player's hands.

Amy Rose's Abduction

Collision Chaos carries significant story weight. It is here, at the very beginning of the zone, that Metal Sonic abducts Amy Rose — who came to the Little Planet after a premonition. Amy will then be held captive at the end of Stardust Speedway, where Sonic will free her after the famous race.

The Pinball Table Boss

In Zone 3, it's Eggman (not Metal Sonic) who awaits you, perched atop an immense pinball table — a battle nicknamed "Egg Tilter". It's impossible to reach him on foot: you have to let yourself be catapulted by the bumpers to hit him.

Its Reappearances

Collision Chaos returns in the re-releases of Sonic CD (2011 remaster, Sonic Origins). Musical anecdote: the Japanese version of the "Past" theme samples a rave hit from the early 1990s.
