Wing Fortress Zone: Sonic 2's Flying Fortress

LevelSonic 2Death Egg Zone

Dropped off the Tornado onto the deck of a flying battleship, Sonic has less running to do here than falls to avoid. The tenth and second-to-last zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, released in 1992, Wing Fortress Zone strings together retracting platforms, rotating cylinders, propellers and cannons, entirely out in the open air. The hedgehog moves forward alone, Tails' plane having been shot down at the end of Sky Chase. Its boss introduces a first for the series: you never touch Eggman, shielded behind a barrier, and it is his laser cannon that has to be destroyed in eight hits.

A flying battleship, platforms above the void, and an Eggman hidden behind a barrier: Wing Fortress Zone is the penultimate stage of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992). Boarding the doctor's aerial fortress.

🥚 the Death Egg, the next stage.

🚢 Flying Battery Zone, which reuses its boss.

Sonic 2's 10th Zone

Wing Fortress Zone is the 10th and penultimate zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992): Eggman's flying fortress, onto which Sonic lands from the Tornado. The entire level takes place outside, on the deck and sides of the airship, high in the sky.

Arriving at the Wing Fortress
The tenth zone of Sonic 2, the flying fortress is reached from the Tornado, in the middle of an aerial chase.

Dizzying Platforming

Here, caution takes precedence over speed: the main danger is falling off the ship into the void. The level features a succession of retractable platforms that extend and retract from the sides, rotating cylinders, propellers, and cannons. Story detail: Sonic is alone — Tails' Tornado was shot down at the end of Sky Chase.

The platforms of the Wing Fortress
The level gives up speed for a course of moving platforms suspended over the void.

An Unreachable Boss

The final boss marks a first in the series: you never touch Eggman. Entrenched behind a barrier (hence the nickname "Barrier Eggman"), the doctor lets the level itself attack — a sliding laser cannon that must be destroyed (eight hits), while dodging spiked platforms and beams.

Not to be Confused

Note: Wing Fortress (Sonic 2) is not the Flying Battery Zone from Sonic & Knuckles — these are two distinct airships. The connection between the two? The "Laser Prison" mini-boss in Flying Battery is actually an homage to Wing Fortress's barrier boss.

Its Reappearances

Wing Fortress leads directly to Death Egg Zone, the ultimate level. It forms, along with Sky Chase and Death Egg, the grand cinematic finale of Sonic 2 — three single-act zones that follow one another almost without pause.
