LevelSonic 1Labyrinth Zone

Flamethrowers, electric arcs and presses await the hedgehog in Scrap Brain, the sixth and last main zone of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991). Eggman's fortress-factory, on South Island, lines up sheet metal, gears and conveyor belts to be climbed against the flow, with each act even having its own background. At the end of Act 2, the doctor presses a button from behind his force field: a trapdoor drops Sonic into an Act 3 that is nothing other than Labyrinth Zone reskinned and flooded. The only zone in the game without an act boss, it leads on to the Final Zone. Music by Masato Nakamura.

Flamethrowers, electric discharges, and traps around every corner: Scrap Brain Zone is Eggman's ultimate stronghold in Sonic the Hedgehog (1991). Welcome to the heart of the doctor's industrial fortress.

The Last Zone of Sonic 1

Scrap Brain Zone is the 6th and final main zone in Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), on South Island: Eggman's factory-fortress, the heart of his secret base. Decorated with sheet metal, cogs, gears, and mechanical walkways.

A Trap Fortress

The level is a true industrial obstacle course: flamethrowers, electric arcs, conveyor belts to climb against the current, rotating pipes, and presses. Each act even has its own background—a singularity in the game.

The Flooded Act 3

Scrap Brain holds a twist. At the end of Act 2, Eggman, safe behind a force field, presses a button: a trapdoor opens and sends Sonic plummeting into Act 3. But Act 3 is actually a re-skinned version of Labyrinth Zone — a flooded (with polluted water) maze where drowning is once again a threat. Note: Scrap Brain is the only zone in the game without an act boss.

Act 3 recycles the setting of Labyrinth Zone: the factory ends up flooded, and drowning becomes the threat again.

Towards the Final Zone

At the end of Act 3, Sonic doesn't fight yet: the level leads to the Final Zone, a short arena dedicated to the final battle against Eggman. Scrap Brain is therefore the last "playable" classic zone before the decisive duel.

Its Reappearances

Scrap Brain returns in all Sonic 1 compilations. Its music, composed by Masato Nakamura, was even remixed for the Sonic Advance menu and is among the playable tracks in Super Smash Bros.
