Mystic Cave owes its reputation above all to one famous trap, the spike pit in Act 2 in single player, a dead-end hole that only Knuckles manages to escape in Knuckles in Sonic 2. At the end of the act, the Egg Digger drills through the ceiling to rain down rocks and stalactites before attacking with its drills, in eight hits. The two-player theme came from the cut Hidden Palace; in 2013, the pit became its entrance.

Sonic 2's Mystic Cave
Mystic Cave Zone is the 6th zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) — not the 7th (Oil Ocean follows). It is a vast underground cavern on West Side Island: purple rock, green crystals, vines, wooden walkways, and firefly lanterns. Not to be confused with the Mystic Ruins from Sonic Adventure.
The Cursed Pit
Mystic Cave owes its (bad) reputation to a tragically famous trap: the inescapable spiked pit in Act 2 (in solo mode). By grabbing a certain vine, you can fall into a pit entirely lined with spikes, with no way out — a guaranteed death that has trapped generations of players. Only Knuckles, in Knuckles in Sonic 2, can escape by climbing the walls.

The Drilling Boss
At the end of Act 2, Eggman awaits Sonic in the Egg Digger, a drilling machine. His tactic: to drill through the cave's ceiling to rain down rocks and stalactites, before descending to attack with his drills. Eight hits are enough to defeat him.
A Song and a Ghost
The soundtrack was composed by Masato Nakamura, of the band Dreams Come True, who was also composing his album The Swinging Star at the time. A curious fact: the melancholic two-player theme for the zone was originally the music for Hidden Palace Zone, a cut level from Sonic 2 — recycled after its abandonment.

Its Reappearances
Mystic Cave appears in all re-releases of Sonic 2. A surprising turnaround: in the 2013 mobile remaster (and later Sonic Origins), the famous pit was cleared of its spikes and transformed into an entrance to the finally restored Hidden Palace Zone. The game's most reviled trap became a secret door.
