Sonic and the Black Knight (2009) places him in Arthurian legend, armed with Caliburn, a talking sword revealed to be Excalibur, with Shadow as Lancelot, Knuckles as Gawain and Blaze as Percival — the real antagonist being Merlina. Two super forms come out of it: Darkspine and Excalibur Sonic.

Sonic and the Secret Rings (2007)
The first Sonic game on Wii, Sonic and the Secret Rings (2007) plunges the hero into the world of the Arabian Nights. Sonic is helped by Shahra, the Ring Genie, to stop the evil Erazor Djinn, who wants to erase the storybook. In the final battle, Erazor transforms into Alf Layla wa-Layla.
Sonic and the Black Knight (2009)
Two years later, Sonic and the Black Knight (2009) transports Sonic to the legend of King Arthur. Summoned by the sorceress Merlina, Sonic becomes a knight wielding Caliburn, a talking sword that turns out to be the true Excalibur. The Knights of the Round Table are also embodied by familiar faces: Shadow as Lancelot, Knuckles as Gawain, Blaze as Percival.
A small trap for fans: the true final antagonist is not King Arthur, but Merlina, who becomes the "Dark Queen".

Darkspine and Excalibur Sonic
Each game offers Sonic a new super-form. In Secret Rings, he becomes Darkspine Sonic by absorbing the World Rings of sadness, rage, and hatred. In Black Knight, he transforms into Excalibur Sonic, an armored form, to defeat Merlina.
