Marble Zone : le niveau de lave de Sonic 1

Marble Zone: Sonic 1's lava level

LevelSonic 1South Island

After the rush of Green Hill, Sonic the Hedgehog hits the brakes: Marble Zone, the second zone of the 1991 game, trades speed for dark ruins and lava. Its three acts rest on puzzle platforming, between stone blocks pushed or ridden above the magma, floor switches and blocks hanging from chains, while the grassy platforms catch fire if you linger. At the end of act 3, Eggman flies over a central pool in his Egg Mobile: eight hits to bring him down. The theme is by Masato Nakamura.

After the exhilarating speed of Green Hill, we move on to dark ruins and lava: Marble Zone is the first real obstacle in Sonic the Hedgehog (1991). A slow, methodical, and burning level, not to be confused with its namesake in Sonic 3.

Sonic 1's 2nd Zone

Marble Zone is the 2nd zone of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), on South Island, right after Green Hill. Be careful of a common confusion: it has nothing to do with Marble Garden Zone, the 3rd zone of Sonic 3 — two completely different levels. Like all zones in Sonic 1, it has three acts.

The first brake

Marble Zone abruptly breaks the fast pace of Green Hill: it's the first real difficulty spike in the game. The level focuses on puzzle-platforming: you push or ride stone blocks to cross lava, activate ground switches, and dodge hanging chain blocks that fall.

The pace changes completely: blocks to push and slow platforms replace free running.

Watch out for the lava

Lava is everywhere: it hurts on contact (you lose your rings) and some pools spit fireballs in cycles. The grassy platforms on top are unstable and catch fire if you linger there. Falling into a lava pit without a ring, however, is fatal.

The lava of Marble Zone
The lava flows force you to wait for the floating platforms, even if that breaks your momentum completely.

The fire boss

At the end of Act 3, Eggman awaits you above a central pool of lava. Aboard his Egg Mobile, he flies over the arena and drops fireballs that successively ignite the two stone platforms. You have to hit him when he descends to the center: eight hits to defeat him.

Its reappearances

Marble Zone is playable identically in all Sonic 1 compilations, from the 2013 mobile remaster to Sonic Origins. Unlike Green Hill, it has never had a 3D remake — but its theme, by Masato Nakamura, remains one of the most covered tracks from the soundtrack.
